4.0 out of 5 stars Jolly Good Show!, September 30, 2011
This review is from: Duo Trio Quartet (Audio CD)
Pete Jolly (Peter Ceragioli) was a very busy musician, not surprisingly, as he was a piano prodigy. He played in a piano-based jazz trio for many years but was also often in the studio doing session work for movies and TV shows. Musicians of his calibre were needed and in demand as studio time was, and is, expensive. By way of example, he played piano on Chris Montez' hit records "Call Me," "The More I See You" and "There Will Never Be Another You." Like Hal Blaine, he had so much talent that his skills were often called upon to get a record right the first time. But, how many people, other than jazz enthusiasts, really knew who he was outside of the recording studio? He didn't have a major hit record, even in the jazz world.

This recording is from the mid-1950s, when he was just getting known as a fine session player. This is a very good example of 1950s, straight-ahead, small combo jazz. If the company that bought A&M Records ever decides to release "Herb Alpert Presents Pete Jolly" from ca. 1968, it is also well worth owning. Marty Paich arranged it and it has a great rendition of Bacharach's "Windows of the World" on it. For now, one will have to settle for the vinyl.
