Product Description

Color: Smoke Anodized

Metalcast is the answer to dressing up your chrome and metal surfaces. To achieve the anodized metal look on non-metal or painted surfaces, first prime with the high heat resistant, fast drying ground coat MC 100 (sold separately). Then turn ordinary chrome pieces into a bright, transparent-colored metallic finish in an easy, one step process. Specially formulated to work over properly prepared shiny, bare metal, faux chrome-like surfaces for a spectacular metallic finish. Metalcast is a durable enamel finish that is oil, gas and heat resistant to 500 degrees Fahrenheit intermittently. Use it on both interior and exterior accessories-even high heat applications under the hood. Features the EZ Touch fan spray nozzle.

Here are a few pointers and clarifications for those not familiar with this product... yet want to get decent results !

The Metal-Cast line-up is essentially a 'clear' pigment paint. It's like a dye or tint, commonly referred to as a candy paint. Therefore, the base coat, (beginning) color, texture matters - because it become a part of the final look. And since this type of paint is basically a transparent color, it essentially colorizes what ever you want to paint. I've had success tinting raw sanded aluminum parts for that 'anodized effect. However, to get consistent/uniform anodized effect on most projects, it's a good idea to paint your part with the 'Ground' product, as this is a metallic/silver speck paint.

Tips :
Many thin coats !! I can't stress the importance of applying just a small thin light coat, allow to dry, then repeat. We tend to want to lay the paint down all at once - RESIST THAT URGE ! First, the nozzle doesn't quite layout an even coat regardless of how smooth you are. So forcing yourself to lay down many many multiple coats will actually help you sum a more evenly average coverage - which is a good thing. Second, the quick drying of the aerosol propellant cools the part, which means if laying down too much at one application will attract more moisture (condensation) thus leads to cloudy/milky flaws. Again, avoid this by keeping very thin coats at a time, allow to dry and part to warm back up. One good thing, the thin coats flash-off (dry) pretty quick, so another coat can be ready within minutes. I found a heat-gun (or heated hair drier) handy for accelerating the application of coats and getting a cloud-free build-up of color.

Color: Blue Anodized Verified Purchase
I used this to put a blue color on decorative chrome finish aluminum diamond plate pieces I fabricated to dress up my engine bay. The color is amazing! It really makes a cool accent even cooler! Be careful not to spray too heavy, though. The paint is very thin, and runs very easily.

Color: Ground Coat Verified Purchase
I've tried the Smoke, Blue, Green and Purple Dupli-Color Metalcast paints and the first applications I tried without using this MC-100 ground coat between the primer and the color coat. Let me assure you that the color does not "pop" and does not obtain the anodized or "Metalcast" effect at all without this ground coat application which specifically give it the metallic finish. It does not say that except on the ground coat can itself but it does make all the difference. I gave it four stars because unlike the Amazon description, it does not have the Dupli-Color easy fan nozzle, it has a standard spray nozzle so you get a small fan of spray that is much easier to create runs with. Second reason for four stars is that it uses a small metal flake like particle in the product to give the "Metalcast" effect. The effect is great in your paint but the problem in the application process is that unless you're in a paint booth you're going to look like a glitter princess when you're done as well as anything in close proximity to your project so plan ahead and have the room to keep the glitter off everything else while you're working. I'm updating this review to include an answer for another customer. The coverage for a can of this spray is stated as 12 to 14 square feet. As a more realistic example, I used this on a standard set of 4 Dodge RAM 1500 5 spoke plastic clad "chrome" rims. I was able to get three light coats on all 4 rims from one can. I recommend this product.

Color: Smoke Anodized Verified Purchase
It may only be my situation but I looked at this metal cast smoke as a way to take my bright chrome "plastic clad" wheels down to a much darker shade to better match the "Night Runner" effect I'm going for without just going to a black wheel. Then I get the cans in the mail and the cap looks very much like the chrome already on my wheels! Well I have already replaced my original mirrors so I took one of them with the plastic "chrome" covers and figured it was time for a test run. Since this was only a test I spent only a little time with a degreaser wipe down and a very light sanding with 1000grit wet/dry sandpaper. I dropped on three light coats of gray sandable primer 10 minutes apart. (Note: Duplicolor says use their MC100 Metalcast Ground Coat under this instead of a standard primer) I waited 20 minutes and then did three light coats of the smoke 10 minutes apart (has a 1 hour flash time) and since this was not a wheel paint, I figured I'd cover the smoke with the Duplicolor clear wheel coating to protect it a little better. Again three light coats 10 minutes apart. First off, when the smoke goes on, it is in fact the color shown on the cap in the picture. Light coats start out looking spotty but after three light coats, it's dark and looks great. As advertised, this can be done at this point because you get nice metal look by itself. Second, if you do use a clear coat on top of the smoke be advised that when you first spray it on the smoke will immediately look like it is turning an almost white light gray and you think you've ruined it! Thankfully though if you walk away and let it dry for the same 10 minute interval and return, the smoke has also returned to its original dark color and once you put on three light coats you have a great looking dark smoke color with a great shine!Read more ›
