Book Description

What do you do when your ship is about to hit an asteroid?

Why, you jump in your Corp-provided DupliPod, of course. It's effective. It's foolproof. It's safe. First it records your brain patterns, then kills you. Saves on life support in the deep reaches. The DupliPod will grow you a new body when it's safe; you will awake refreshed and renewed.

Sometimes, it doesn't work quite right.

Duplicate: would you die to save your own life?

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful Space Opera January 14, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
It's very difficult to discuss the plot of the book without giving away spoilers.

Let's just say that it is basically a puzzle story; the puzzle involves the survival of the protagonist in unusual and very uncomfortable situations; and he dies. Several times.

Against the protagonist: an asteroid mining corporation, greed, piracy, and contract negotiations. Usually more than one of these at a time. There are twists aplenty, moral ambiguity, and the use of weapons.

Overall, an enjoyable read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read, interesting premise December 28, 2009

I read this book on my Kindle over the weekend. I am not usually a SciFi reader, but I enjoyed this book a lot. It was action packed and I got a kick out of the premise of the DupliPod. Makes me think about how our values would be different if duplication were a reality. Good, quick read!

5.0 out of 5 stars neat premise, compelling storytelling January 10, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a story of technology gone wrong that focuses on the effects on the people more than the tech itself. It makes me think of some of Larry Niven's early work (e.g. the teleporter stories).

The story is well-crafted both in plot and character development. The point of view changes a few times, which in some stories can cause readers to get lost, but I never had any trouble with the switches, and they brought a richness that you usually don't get with a single POV character. I could relate to these characters.

There's a lot going on in this novella, so it does require the reader to pay attention. That said, at ~100 pages (on paper) you can easily read it in a single sitting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly creative, and a fun read June 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Alex Feinman sets his novel Duplicate in a future ruled by greed and power, as nearly-expendable humans risk everything and nothing for a profit margin. Asteroid mining is always a risky business, but if your most experienced miners can be regrown after a fatal accident, there's no real call for safety.

A veteran miner thinks little of these risks, until a series of unlikely mishaps propel him into the adventure of several dozen lifetimes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read! December 23, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I read this in one sitting (from an ebook reader). It is an edge-of-your seat page turner for those who are fans of speculative fiction taking place in the not-too-distant future. The characters development is strong and the philosophical issues that this not-unlikely future technology posits are quite compelling. I'm hoping for a sequel, or prequel, or movie adaptation!
