Sylvia is a single British woman who falls in love with Patrick within a few weeks of meeting him. Patrick is a sensitive and caring man, everything that Sylvia is looking for. Soon they are married and Sylvia couldn't be happier until she uncovers some disturbing revelations about her husband. Patrick is facing deportation unless his status is updated by the home office and his mother has become too involved with their marriage. To make matters worse, Patrick has suddenly turned into this uncaring, sex addicted, violent man who only cares about satisfying his own needs. Will Sylvia try and save this marriage or will she walk away?

Duplicity is a thought-provoking novel by Shila Amos-Efe. Amos-Efe gives readers an insider's look into the life of a single woman looking for love in the United Kingdom. The drama that Sylvia goes through in her marriage will keep you glued to the pages. This story develops at a slow and easy pace, giving the reader a chance to really connect with the characters. Amos-Efe does a wonderful job of telling this heart-wrenching tale of domestic abuse without being too graphic. Duplicity is emotionally-charged and captivating. This is a wonderful start to Shila Amos-Efe's writing career.

3.0 out of 5 stars Same Thing, Different Day, February 27, 2008
This review is from: Duplicity (Paperback)
As a wife and mother, I know the things which I will tolerate and what would push me straight over the edge. Knowing this and the mouth that I have on me when I need to defend myself or my children, I am certain that I would have been killed if I were Sylvia in Duplicity by Shila Amos-Efe. A woman who wanted to abide by the traditional African values, she was brought up with, but her husband, Patrick, was a lair, a cheater, and a con-artist. He knew just what to do to get Sylvia to make the sacrifices she made and abuse she took, only to stay married to Patrick.

Patrick met naïve Sylvia one day walking on the streets of London. I do not know what attracted one to the other, but things happened and they were married. Patrick was a sweet talker one day, a loose cannon the next. Sylvia walked on eggshells at all times. It would not have been so bad if others did not contribute to the taunting of Sylvia's sanity. When Sylvia's own family tells her one thing and the in-laws told her something else, confusion began clouding her mind. What should be unequivocally right seemed to be wrong, causing Patrick to have the upper hand at taking advantage of Sylvia.

What would you do if you fell in love with someone but it was quite obvious you were laying down next to a stranger? At what point would you say enough is enough and remove yourself and your children from an unhealthy situation?

Shila Amos-Efe's Duplicity is an engrossing novel. The characters are individuals I know I have come in contact with at one time in my short thirty years on this earth. Some of them made me say that's a true friend. Others I wanted to physically harm, but I always had to remind myself they were not real. Even with all these exceptional personalities, there were many errors throughout the entire book. At times it was very repetitive, and the timeline was screwed up as well. There were grammatical errors and I know at times Ms. Amos-Efe portrayed the mother-in-law as a woman who spoke little English so it was broken, but the errors were there. This book could have been shorter and still put forth the same message. I recommend this book to those always sacrificing their dreams and beliefs to make others happy.
