- Publisher's Weekly

Captain Tracy Keener, a military attorney, is the by-name request counsel for Captain Adam Burke, a special ops officer accused of leading his team onto an active bombing range during a war-readiness exercise that leads to the death of his entire team. Burke says he was under direct orders to do what he did. The honchos deny it. But when Keener pushes and learns chemical weapons could have been involved, attempts on her life prove there's more than meets the eye in this case. There's murder and a conspiracy that goes up the chain of command. The question is how high--and if she and Burke will survive attempts to silence them long enough to expose the truth . . . once they discover it.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this page-turner that fuses thriller and romance, Air Force attorney Captain Tracy Keener has been assigned the toughest case of her careerAthe defense of Captain Adam Burke, an Intel operative accused of killing and abandoning his men while on a covert mission. Opinion around the base is unanimous about Burke's guilt, and the attorney becomes the target of numerous death threats and attempts on her life. Keener's idealistic nature prevails over fear, pushing her to search for the truth, even after Burke is supposedly killed in a prison fire and she is ordered by superiors to close the case. Burke's mysterious return and collaboration with Keener allow the pair to uncover a widespread governmental conspiracy, dubbed "Project Duplicity," that involves dangerous new chemical technology. Although the ending will seem too neat for some readers, Hinze (Shades of Gray; Festival, under the pen name Victoria Barrett) has a knack, as illustrated in Burke and Keener's complex relationship, for combining compellingly realistic characterizations with suspense and a romantic plot line.

From Library Journal

Military lawyer Capt. Tracy Keener is ordered to defend Adam Burke, who has been accused of treason, cowardice, and killing his own men. However, meeting Adam plants the seeds of doubt in her mind, and when he is apparently murdered, Tracy vows to find out what really happened. Her search for the truth puts her own life in danger. Written in the tradition of A Few Good Men, this highly suspenseful story of a solitary woman's fight against an evil military conspiracy is one readers won't want to put down. Hinze, a resident of Niceville, FL, is the author of another military intrigue, Shades of Gray.ASM

5.0 out of 5 stars Great military suspense novel August 6, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is my second novel by Vicki Hinze and amazingly it outshone Shades of Gray.

When military lawyer Captain Tracy Keener is assigned to defend fellow officer Adam Burke, accused of treason, cowardiance and murder, she realizes this is career suicide. Everybody, including Tracy, knows that Captain Burke is guilty, but things may not always be what they seem. Adam tells Tracy that he has been set up and so has she. Not believeing him, she searches for answers. When Tracy uncovers some proof to what Adam is telling her, Adam mysteriously dies in a fire.

Haunted and feeling guilty for Adam's death, Tracy risks her life to find the answers. In the meantime, love blossoms from an unexpected source.

This book was great! If you love a legal thriller-throw in some romance-this is the book for you!

3.0 out of 5 stars Needed More! June 19, 1999

Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is the second book I have read from Ms.Hinze and I was sorely dissappointed in this book. The 2 main characters seemed to have "fallen" in love without ever getting to know each other. I mean Tracey only visited Adam twice in prison and this was enough to risk everything for him? I think that Ms. Hinze has a great future but really needs to work on developing relationships between her main characters. The story was very compelling in the beginning and lost steam at the end.

Hinze has REALLY done it this time! DUPLICITY is the best romantic suspense I've ever read. Fast-paced, well-researched, with a plot so real you'll think you're reading tomorrow's headlines, DUPLICITY has characters with such honor and depth you'll find yourself glowing with renewed respect and awe for the women and men who put their lives on the line every day to protect us all. Kudos, Ms. Hinze, for reminding us of all we should be as Americans. I can't wait to read ACTS OF HONOR due out in January 2000. With the Y2K scare infiltrating the media, it's nice to know I can start the next millenium with a fabulous new book!
