2.0 out of 5 stars poor off-on switch
Off-on button is on bottom of the flashlight requiring 2 hands to use, a most inconvenient thing to do when you are working. I would return it except, since it is open now, I would recover little of my expense. The light function seems to be very good.

I first purchased the Duracell Daylite AA and CR123 versions, and was so impressed with their brightness and build-quality that I decided to take a chance on the D version, even though there were no reviews yet.

It arrived yesterday. It works well. Heavy metallic case. The on-off switch seems a little more awkward to use on this than it does on the smaller Daylites. Imho, on a flashlight of this size/weight, it would have been better if it had the on-off switch in the standard position.

I got this double D version for the extra runtime from the bigger batteries. If I had to do it all over again, I'd probably get the version with the double C batteries instead, because it's quite a bit lighter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic light, March 15, 2010

Fantastic light. Feels surprisingly durable and solid in your hand.

The spotlight and flood adjustment are minor, offering very little change to the actual beam. If this is critical to you, you may want to look for another light. I find it mostly unnecessary since the beam has both a bright center and an adequate halo.

I own several flashlights, and I believe this to be perhaps the finest flashlight I have seen at this price point. Are there better lights out there? Certainly. But nothing that even competes at this price level. For the money, this is literally a standout product.

I've been very satisfied with this flashlight build quality and light output. It has a lot more apparent brightness then the Maglite I bought a few years ago that is also LED. I would put the quality of this flash light on par with a Maglite brand.

This is a bright flashlight, and the batteries last a long time. Much better than a MagLite. So what if the switch is on the tail end, big deal. I can still hold it and turn it on with the same hand, contrary to what some have said. This is a great purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good alternative to a Maglite, August 13, 2011

As others have said the on/off switch is on the end opposite the lens (tail-switch). This is not a problem as you'll likely keep it lens facing down as that end is wider and gives more stability. Turning it on as you pick it up is easy. The switch on the Maglite is on the side which requires fumbling by touch to locate it, I'm not sure how that's better than a tail-switch. The spot to flood option is easy to operate and works well, better than my Maglite LED light in fact. The package made me think you could remove the lens cap and convert this into a small lantern but that isn't the case unfortunately. It's probably much more waterproof this way but it would have been a neat option.

This is smaller and lighter than my Maglite LED light (using 3 D-cells) which is good because it's easier to store and carry, but not as useful if you need to use the light as a club or to fend off someone. That's not too likely but I'd much rather have my heavier and sturdier Maglite in that situation so it stays where my wife can get to it easily for peace of mind if she has to go investigate a noise. I now use the Duracell 2-D light.

As for brightness, without proper test tools it's hard to be precise but to me the brightness seems very similar between this and the Maglite. The flood is better on the Duracell, the spot better on the Maglite but the Duracell has a whiter light, maybe that's why they call it Daylite technology. The seals on the Duracell might be a bit weaker and it squeaks very loudly if I open it so I'll have to fix that but I'd say the lights are comparable. Either is much better than knock-off brands and most non-LED flashlights, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value, January 14, 2011

Most low end flashlights fail because their slide switches
are poor quality. So the push button type on the tail end of this one
is a change I'll accept if it means longer service.
The overall output , light source and reflector , is outstanding tech
for the money. ( If you want more , pay the cost of a Sure Fire
model )
The 2 D cells are heavy . long life , available everywhere
and cheap . You damn well know your getting the heavyweight serious
work flashlight.
If I were king , I would :
Add one or more flat surfaces to the barrel design as it rolls
off any resting place .
If it falls to the ground in the dark , and is not switched on,
a reflective or glowing ring would be a low cost feature to
incorporate into aiding in finding it. The classic trade off
between fashion designer image , and how people really use the product. Maybe if the corporate goof balls who designed this
by committee actually read these reviews we'll see some updates or
additional design features.
It was made in China , land of shady operators and commercial
rip offs ...time will tell if the US product managers will kill the Duracell quality image though the race to the bottom .
Mean while take advantage of the slave labor rates
of the sweat shops.

1.0 out of 5 stars LED Lamp Failed after Six Months, December 23, 2010
This review is from: Duracell Daylite 160-Lumens, 4-Watt LED Flashlight with 2-D Alkaline Batteries (Health and Beauty)
I purchased 2 of the Duracell 2D flashlights on Amazon last year and one of them failed in the first six months. Duracell has yet to replace the unit and I have called customer service "four times". I mailed it back to them in the packaging they sent me two months ago. I'm still waiting for them to replace the unit or send me a refund. It's suppose to have a lifetime warranty but they don't stand behind the product. P&G should be ashamed of their customer service department they just lost a loyal customer. I'm switching to another brand of batteries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Duracell Daylite 4 watt LED Flashlight with 2 D batteries, January 28, 2012

This flashlight is a bargain. It is well made with aluminum body and at 4 watts, it is very bright. There are very few affordable LED flashlights available that use D size batteries which you need for descent run time. I take my dog on long walks at night and I need a bright flashlight that wont run down the batteries in a matter of minutes. This is perfect. The adjustable head is very functional for going from a spot to flood beam. It produces a nice even light. I gave the smaller Daylite with two C size batteries to my wife who wanted something smaller and lighter. Duracell alkaline batteries are included. Because I use it every night, I will replace the alkaline's with quality rechargeable NiMH batteries. The copper band identifies it as a Duracell but adds nothing to the appearance. The aluminum body may be cold in winter but I prefer that to having a sleeve made from Chinese rubber that almost always seems to smell bad.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great either, January 5, 2012

This review is from: Duracell Daylite 160-Lumens, 4-Watt LED Flashlight with 2-D Alkaline Batteries (Health and Beauty)
I really wanted to love this. I like the way it looks, but it doesn't hold a candle to my LED MagLites.

Pros
No dark spot in beam
The knurled grip of the barrel is quite nice and functional.
I like the aesthetics of the copper top but it's just eye candy.
Feels lightweight and well-engineered.

Cons
Compared to my LED MagLites, this isn't very bright.
Changing the focus has almost no discernable effect to the beam.
On/Off button is on the end, which makes it a pain to use with one free hand (if you're dog walking for example)
Feels too lightweight to be strong. When compared to a MagLite, it seems like this would break if you had to use it as a club to fend off an angry animal or mugger.

Would recommend getting the LED Maglites instead. They are extremely bright and have a very useable focusing head (although they do leave a dark spot in the center when on wide beam).

3 cell version
Mag-Lite ST3D016 3-D Cell LED Flashlight, Black

or the 2 cell version
MAGLITE ST2D016 2-D Cell LED Flashlight, Black
