3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite as advertised, June 23, 2005
This review is from: Duracell CEF12N Quick Charger for AA & AAA Rechargeable Batteries (Health and Beauty)
[...]

The description does say that it charges 4 AA batteries in 2 to 4 hours. The information on the package I received, though, says it charges 2 AA batteries in 3 hours and 4 AA batteries in 6 hours.

Also, the information on the back of the package itself is contradictory. The top part of the descriptions say that the LED will blink on and off at second intervals (one second on and one second off) if the batteries are good and at 1/4 second intervals (on and off twice each second) if the batteries are bad. Of course when I put the batteries in to be charged, the LED blinked at 1/2 second intervals. So what does that mean? Thankfully, the information at the bottom of the directions is clearer and corresponded to how the charger actually performed. The information at the top part of the directions seems to be left over from an early version of the charger and doesn't apply to the charger inside the packaging. They definitely need to work on making the directions clearer, or at least eliminate the incorrect information.

Since there aren't individual LEDs, the batteries must be placed in individually to see if they are good. There is no way to tell which battery is bad if more than one is placed in since the directions say to place all the batteries in before connecting the power.

That being said, the charger works as described. It stops charging when the batteries are full and fully charges empty batteries withing the time described on the packaging (not the product description.) Also, the directions say to use only Duracell NiMH batteries, but it has worked fine on other brands I've tried without incident. I think it's just their way of eliminating liability for other brands and selling their product.

Overall, it's been a good charger so far, even if the description is slightly misleading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for a cheapie!, March 28, 2005
This review is from: Duracell CEF12N Quick Charger for AA & AAA Rechargeable Batteries (Health and Beauty)
Great for radios and other portables that use odd numbers of batteries, and for tossing around. The case is light, but very strong.

The only real problem is that there is a single status LED, rather than one per battery. This way, you don't know of an abnormal battery without testing one at a time, and don't know about varying degrees of charge until all battries are charged.

However, for under $20, it's hard to complain, when chargers with similar capabilities (even if they have more features) start at $40 and go up.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good product, bad description work, August 23, 2005

Advertised to charge 4-AAs in two hours. Heck, it took me about 6 hours. But it does charge, that's a good thing.

I think it drains the battery empty before fully charge. It's a good move to extend the battery life.

Also used on RadioChack rechargeables and works.
