This Stax crackling fire log is three stackable, crackling logs for one evenings fire. Made from 100 percent renewable resources. Stacks and burns like real wood fire. The good: they really do heat.
Skymeat
Then the little stax log just burns like any other log in the middle of the fire and keeps things going.
Joe mendleski
It lasts decently, but not necessarily that long.

We've been buying these at the grocery store, and they make a very nice fire. They're not quite as hot as regular firewood, but they burn much longer, produce fewer emissions, and leave a lot less ash in the fireplace. They crackle, but don't splutter and pop like raw logs. (A nice feature for safety paranoids like me.) We generally get the 3-packs in the store for anywhere from $7.49 to $9.99 - but they often have an instant coupon attached for $3 off. The literature that comes as part of the package also contains a "$5 off 2 packs" coupon that doesn't expire, so we also save those for when we buy them without the instant coupon. They're not terribly cheap, but I think it's a nice evening's fire for 5 - 7 bucks. We'll start the fire at the beginning of a hockey game, and manage to get through that and a movie before the fire dies out.

Try them!

I've used the Duraflame Stax logs a few times now, one 3 pack and one 6 pack. The box says that 3 Stax logs will burn 3 - 3.5 hours. One reason I bought these was the idea that I could have a fairly short duration fire.

My experience with them follows.

Cons:
They can take anywhere from 15-30 minutes to actually get going well, the paper does not seem to light the logs well.

Once they do get going they are very nice for about an hour or so then you must add another log or they slowly burn down to very minimal flames and begin to put off a greater amount of smoke.

If you add a third log it again takes about 20 minutes or more to get going well and then only lasts less than an hour before dying to minimal flames again.

Three logs do not stop burning after 3 - 3.5 hours as advertised, they smolder on with tiny flickers of flame for much longer. For example, a fire started last night at 9pm using only two logs, no third added, was still smoldering away at 2am.

In the end the fire burns down to very small flames while the logs appear to be barely consumed. They continue to burn for a few hours like this almost smoldering away. The smaller the flames get, the more smoke they generate. Twice now they have set of my smoke alarm, which is unusual (I've yet to have a wood fire do this).

They burn down so low and put off enough smoke twice I needed to open a window to create a better draft to keep the smoke alarm from going off again, which of course sucks cold air into the room.

They do not put off a great deal of heat, you're not going to keep warm with these logs unless you sit right next to the fire.

Short of using real wood, this is your best option for a nice evening's fire. They light easily, and produce a hearty flame that lasts for the first hour or so. The flames do die down a bit after that, but after two hours you can add a third log (always start with two!), and the flames come back. They don't generate a large amount of heat, but if all you are looking for is atmosphere and the sound of a crackling fire, then this is the log for you!

unfortunately this was a disappointing purchase. While I usually have great success with purchases from Amazon...this was a dud. The logs either don't light or smoke causing a very uncomfortable smoky evening. Rubbish!

These logs are really, really great. Pricey, but great. The crackling is a real nice feature and if you put two in, you'll have a nice fire for about 3 hours. Stir it around a bit then and you'll get another 1/2. Soooooo convenient!

I still think real wood is the way to go but these are by far the best Duraflames I have used. I would recommend these to someone who wants Duraflame.

I was beginning to wonder if I would ever get the chance to sample and review the New Duraflame Stax product I had received. Living in Southern California, it's not unusual to have 80 degree Christmases and New Years. So, I was really happy when last week the weather finally took a turn towards winter, since I really enjoy fall and winter and have never liked warm weather. I thought last week when the temperature didn't get out of the fifties it was time to crack open my Duraflame Stax 3 pack.

This is what Duraflame has to say about their new product:

The perfect winter pairing is a cozy wood fire on a chilly evening. Yet, after a long day at work or a hectic afternoon of errands, building a fire can be an "I wish" idea. A new quick way to turn desire into reality is to use the latest innovation from Duraflame: Stax® logs, the firelog with the stacked aesthetics and crackling sounds of a wood fire. Unlike building a firewood fire, a Stax fire takes just minutes to build without the mess or splinters.

Always start your stax fire using exactly two logs (never 1 or 3), propped one on top of the other as you might set up a real wood fire in an X configuration. After about 2 hours when the flames have diminished, if you wish to prolong your fire, you may add another log (ONLY ONE). Additional logs may be added to extend the fire even longer, but never add more than ONE log per hour. Just three stax logs are enough for one evening's fire (about 3 - 3.5 hours). Stax logs aren't intended to be used as a single log fire. They're specifically formulated to burn with two logs as instructed.

Duraflame also has a video available on youtube that shows you exactly how easy it is to get this item started.
