4.0 out of 5 stars A rockin' good time, April 30, 2005
This review is from: Duran Duran Tribute Album (Audio CD)
This is a very FUN tribute album. If you are a serious, die hard Duran Duranie, you probably won't like this (or any other tribute album dedicated to Duran Duran). However, for the rest of us, this has a bunch of creative interpretations of these great songs. I bought the CD for Goldfinger's version of Rio (which includes a hilarious 30 second break into Dio's `Rainbow in the Dark'). Other very good renditions come from Jimmy Eat World (New Religon), the Deftones (the Chauffeur), and Less than Jake (The Reflex).
The album is very reminescint of 80's hair bands with some songs that rock out, with an occasional power ballad. It won't be the best album you ever buy, but it's a good time.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent covers by punk/ska bands, November 22, 1998
This review is from: Duran Duran Tribute Album (Audio CD)
as a true duran duran fan in my youth, then a punk/ska listener and player, nothing could have been more welcome than this tribute. if duran duran was ever your secret vice, this album will do the trick. those boys should be proud their songs ported so well to the punk/ska style.

i have converted my tribute disc to mp3 so i can listen at work on my sun station, and often folks stop by to ask "who's playing that?!? that's a great cover!" many of the bands featured had some great ideas to input, and i highly recommend this to any who like either duran duran or punk/ska.

now, if only a punk/ska beatles tribute could happen :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable listening, for Duran fans and punk/ska fans alike, March 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Duran Duran Tribute Album (Audio CD)
Like most "tribute" CDs, this one has tracks on it that are sure to join a listener's list of favorites, and other tracks that nobody will probably ever want to listen to again. Happily, the former outnumber the latter.

On the plus side, Goldfinger earn their gold watches for their take on "Rio." I don't want to describe this track in too much detail, lest I spoil the surprise(s). But really, check it out, it's hysterical! Other choice tracks include the Deftones' "The Chauffeur," Buck-o-Nine's "Hold Back the Rain," Home Grown's "Planet Earth," Reel Big Fish's swingin' version of "Hungry like the Wolf," and the Mr. T Experience's mod take on "Is There Something I Should Know."

On the negative side, we have not one but two bands offering disappointing versions of "Girls on Film": Abba tribute band Bjorn Again, whose version sounds like -- words fail me here -- a band imitating Abba playing a Duran Duran cover; and the Wesley Willis Fiasco, a band whose name will elicit chuckles, until you listen to them and realize the name doesn't go far enough. Also, the band that covers "A View to a Kill" (sorry, I forget the band's name) seems to have just one goal: to get the song over with as fast as humanly possible.

Other than those clunkers, there isn't anything on this CD that's less than good. That's 13 good-to-great tracks out of 16 total -- not a bad batting average for this sort of disc. Give this one a spin if you haven't already.
