4.0 out of 5 stars A rockin' good time
This is a very FUN tribute album. If you are a serious, die hard Duran Duranie, you probably won't like this (or any other tribute album dedicated to Duran Duran). However, for the rest of us, this has a bunch of creative interpretations of these great songs. I bought the CD for Goldfinger's version of Rio (which includes a hilarious 30 second break into Dio's `Rainbow...

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent Tribute
While this album is slightly better than the awful Operation Ivy tribute album, I still see nothing special here. Most of the ska bands are too radio friendly for me to get into, and most of the punk bands just aren't that great. THe best cover on the album is River Fenix's (now FenixTx) cover of Ordinary World.

However, for the rest of us, this has a bunch of creative interpretations of these great songs. I bought the CD for Goldfinger's version of Rio (which includes a hilarious 30 second break into Dio's `Rainbow in the Dark'). Other very good renditions come from Jimmy Eat World (New Religon), the Deftones (the Chauffeur), and Less than Jake (The Reflex).
The album is very reminescint of 80's hair bands with some songs that rock out, with an occasional power ballad. It won't be the best album you ever buy, but it's a good time.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent covers by punk/ska bands, November 22, 1998
This review is from: Duran Duran Tribute Album (Audio CD)
as a true duran duran fan in my youth, then a punk/ska listener and player, nothing could have been more welcome than this tribute. if duran duran was ever your secret vice, this album will do the trick. those boys should be proud their songs ported so well to the punk/ska style.

i have converted my tribute disc to mp3 so i can listen at work on my sun station, and often folks stop by to ask "who's playing that?!? that's a great cover!" many of the bands featured had some great ideas to input, and i highly recommend this to any who like either duran duran or punk/ska.

now, if only a punk/ska beatles tribute could happen :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable listening, for Duran fans and punk/ska fans alike, March 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Duran Duran Tribute Album (Audio CD)
Like most "tribute" CDs, this one has tracks on it that are sure to join a listener's list of favorites, and other tracks that nobody will probably ever want to listen to again. Happily, the former outnumber the latter.

On the plus side, Goldfinger earn their gold watches for their take on "Rio." I don't want to describe this track in too much detail, lest I spoil the surprise(s). But really, check it out, it's hysterical! Other choice tracks include the Deftones' "The Chauffeur," Buck-o-Nine's "Hold Back the Rain," Home Grown's "Planet Earth," Reel Big Fish's swingin' version of "Hungry like the Wolf," and the Mr. T Experience's mod take on "Is There Something I Should Know."

On the negative side, we have not one but two bands offering disappointing versions of "Girls on Film": Abba tribute band Bjorn Again, whose version sounds like -- words fail me here -- a band imitating Abba playing a Duran Duran cover; and the Wesley Willis Fiasco, a band whose name will elicit chuckles, until you listen to them and realize the name doesn't go far enough. Also, the band that covers "A View to a Kill" (sorry, I forget the band's name) seems to have just one goal: to get the song over with as fast as humanly possible.

Other than those clunkers, there isn't anything on this CD that's less than good. That's 13 good-to-great tracks out of 16 total -- not a bad batting average for this sort of disc. Give this one a spin if you haven't already.

5.0 out of 5 stars You don't need to love Duran Duran to love this cd..., March 28, 2000
By A Customer

I bought this c.d. for one reason: Reel Big Fish. They did a fantastic cover of Hungry Like the Wolf and I was dying to have it. However, Goldfinger, Buck-O-Nine and some other ska bands do really terrific jobs of recreating Duran Duran's original songs. The end of the album doesn't really appeal to me, as the last five or six songs are a bit boring... but I'm going to have to give the tribute album five stars for the simple reason that Reel Big Fish rocks and any fish fan should own this c.d.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth the Listen, May 3, 2011
This review is from: Duran Duran Tribute Album (Audio CD)
The best song is the Riverfenix, Ordinary World track. I say Riverfenix because I believe it was before the band got sued and had to change their name to Fenix Tx.
Sorry this isn't much of a review. Most songs are good pop punk covers. None of the other reviews mentioned that track so I had to note it. The other tracks are funny but the Riverfenix track rocks and is arguable better than the original.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, May 6, 2006
This review is from: Duran Duran Tribute Album (Audio CD)
It's actually pretty simple. The songs speak for themselves. Anyone who won't admit Duran Duran being one of the greatest pop bands ever and recognizing Simon's talent for melody writing has to reconsider the overall parameters with which one judges. Even the bands that conceptualised this tribute album, which they did for an exact reason, didn't come close to style and beauty with their own songs compared to DD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amusing, July 25, 2005

This review is from: Duran Duran Tribute Album (Audio CD)
This is one of my favorite tribute cd's because the bands (in most cases) truly make the songs their own rather than covering the same old version. 'Rio'and 'Hungry Like the Wolf' stand out and are campy and fun. Not sure if hardened Duran fans would agree but I think this is proof the songs hold up on their own.

4.0 out of 5 stars The most talent packed into any tribute album!, July 13, 2000
This review is from: Duran Duran Tribute Album (Audio CD)
Now, originally I had no interest in any of the other bands on this album with the exception of Home Grown. I had recently bought both of Home Grown's albums and was eager to hear their version of "Planet Earth." I absolutely fell in love with the song once I heard it. However, the great covers don't stop there. After some time of owning the album, I decided to listen to more of the album. The next track I listened to was "Ordinary World" by Riverfenix. Which, currently, is my favorite song on the tribute album. I was blown away when I heard the song and knew that I had to listen to more of the album. So, after the excitement of "Ordinary World" I listened to Reel Big Fish's version of "Hungry Like A Wolf." Yet again another wonderful cover! I was really happy with the tribute album and since I had heard of Mr. T Experience before, I choose to listen to "Is There Something I Should Know." The songs I have just listed are the songs I believe to be the strongholds of the tribute. I was surprised with just how good this really is, and I hope you will be too!
