For The Greatest Generation. I just love this recording.,
By Anne Bosworth (Fort Lauderdale, Florida USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: For the Duration (Audio Cassette)
For anyone who feels like me...like they should have been a young person during WWII...or for anyone who is a member of the Greatest Generation, this is an absolute must for your record (dating myself) CD collection. These are some really fine moments for Rosie. "Saturday Night..." "September Song" "These Foolish Things" "For All We Know" there isn't a song here that doesn't make me feel like a 22 year old newlywed hanging around my New York apartment doing the ironing while I long for my soldier. Maybe that's just too corny, but this is lovely music that evokes memories for some and creates them for others.

This is the best Rosemary Clooney CD I have heard yet. Each song is so well sung (that's obvious, given the artist), but I think that sets Ms. Clooney apart from other singers is her way of turning phrases. The selection "For All We Know" is the most powerful song I have ever heard. The day this CD arrived, I had to drive out of town for a family funeral and was unable to attend an out of state funeral for another relative. The words of this song and the emotions of each of these WWII tunes really spoke to me that weekend. I was so moved my FOR ALL WE KNOW, that I took time to let those I love know how much I do love them. A great CD by a great lady!

"standard tunes during the Second World War from Rosie",
This review is from: For the Duration (Audio CD)
Concord Jazz has outdone themselves with "FOR ALL WE KNOW WE MAY NEVER MEET AGAIN", or so the song goes and through the magic of music these memorable performances by the "girl singer" are here "For The Duration", which has never ended. Just think, the tunes we listened to during the World War II years have never really left us, thanks to Rosie who really understands the times and lyrics.Rosie sings for us in her own special way - "DON'T FENCE ME IN" the classic Cole Porter song and a big hit from her good friend Bing Crosby...the unforgettable "SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY" a Les Brown composition with tender interpretation, has lasting memories that touch your heart...in closing "I'LL BE SEEING YOU" the old times are here again, when Rosemary and these remarkable musicians take a look back when love was everywhere and America was fighting for world freedom. So listen, as Rosie sings with warm and tender feelings for old and new fans, these songs never grow old...fresh original style you've grown to love over the decades from our "girl singer"...this sure hit is not to be missed! Total Time: 56:24 on 14 Tracks...Concord Jazz CCD-4444...(1991)

For the Duration is an excellent CD by Rosemary Clooney that has her singing her heart out on these great tunes from the era of World War Two. The sound quality is excellent as these are more recent recordings of these classic tunes; and the artwork reflects good judgment.
"No Love, No Nothin'" starts the track set with Rosemary singing this sweetly; the piano arrangement is very pretty and elegant at that! The melody also gets strength from the drums and percussion. Rosemary's voice itself is as clear as a bell; and she sings with all her heart and soul. "Don't Fence Me In" features Rosemary front and center with another elegant piano arrangement; Rosemary never misses a note and she handles numerous tempo changes effortlessly like the pro she always was! I really like "Don't Fence Me In." "I Don't Want To Walk Without You Baby" gets the royal treatment from Rosemary; and the horn solo is heavenly! Rosemary and the music that accompanies her make "I Don't Want To Walk Without You Baby" a major highlight of this album! Listen also for "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To;" I always liked this ballad and Rosemary's interpretation is both slightly jazzy and sublime at once. "For All We Know" lets Rosemary open up and display her wide vocal range; she sings with panache and great sensitivity. This really impresses me and I always enjoy this number when Rosemary Clooney sings it. "These Foolish Things (Remind Me Of You)" is a classic pop vocal made into a masterpiece by Rosemary's excellent interpretation of it; and her voice is rich, warm and very vibrant. "They're Either Too Young Or Too Old" is a peppy little tune that I always like; Rosemary infuses this with lots of energy and enthusiasm to make her rendition a very memorable one. Great! There's also Rosemary doing her very best on "The More I See You;" this love song sounds fresh and new--Rosemary's voice is THAT good. "(There'll Be Blue Birds Over) The White Cliffs Of Dover" is a very famous song from the World War Two era; and Rosemary does it great justice with her fine treatment of this number. "(There'll Be Blue Birds Over) The White Cliffs Of Dover" truly showcases just how great Rosemary Clooney was as a vocalist. The album ends very strong with Rosemary performing "I'll Be Seeing You." This very sentimental love ballad is always one I love to hear; and Rosemary doesn't let us down here--she sings this very well. What a great way to end this CD! Overall, this is a fine album of 1940s hits by the great Rosemary Clooney. Her fans will want this one for keepers; and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will want this also.

Simply stuning...,

Rosemary Clooney singing World War II standards backed by a small jazz combo, and occasional strings. Clooney gives jazz tenor sax man Scot Hamilton plenty of space to improvise, in jact you might say at times this set sounds like a jam session. Clooney's crisp clear and jazz oriented phrasing is an absolute joy to hear, all of her more recent CD's on the Concord label are excellent, Clooney has developed into a really great jazz singer. Thic CD is highly recommeded. Also try "Still On The Road," "Do You Miss New York," and my favorite of the Concord bunch "Sings Ballads."

I've known of Ms. Clooney for years of course. A few hits from the 50's, a few movie roles, then marriage and a large family. I even knew that she had developed quite a following in later years as a pop/jazz artist. Perhaps because her type of music gets so little radio play in this age I simply didn't know how good she is. Not until hearing this cd. The lady performs 14 standards and hits every one out of the park! The arrangements are exquisite and so too are the musicians backing her up. I know of no other singer who could possibly perform Cole Porters' Don't Fence Me In as a wistful ballad and get away with it. She not only gets away with it but gives a whole new meaning to the song. This work belongs in eveyone's collection. Light the fire...pour the wine...lay back and enjoy! If this doesn't move you,it's all over! Dear Ms. Clooney, my sincere apologies for taking so long to discover you.

Perfectly done cd my Miss Clooney,

All of Clooney's Concord sets are special but to me, this cd is the highlight of her career(no, I didn't forget about her Ellington collaboration). Here Clooney sings backed by Scott Hamilton's mellow sax, on some special numbers like Don't Fance Me In, Thier Either Too Young ot Too Old, and an exellent version of No Love No Nothin', a truly special and jazz-filled album!

An old pro makes the war years come alive again,
By A Customer
This review is from: For the Duration (Audio CD)
Yeah, she can't quite hit some of the high notes, and the voice wobbles at times, but the lady knows these songs inside out. For someone old enough to remember them when they were new, these vintage World War II tunes carry a lot of extra romantic baggage, which Clooney unloads quietly, intimately, and with her usual impeccable taste. From "No Love, No Nothin' to "I'll Be Seeing You" this CD is for late night listening with brandy, a fire, and a loved one. Destined to become a classic.

Rosemary Clooney at her VERY best,
By A Customer
This review is from: For the Duration (Audio CD)
I was never much of a Clooney fan -- until I heard this CD. Not a false step in the entire 14 cuts. Her voice is mellower than her 50s hey-day stuff, her presentation of the lyrics more meaningful, the musical arrangements are first-rate -- all make for a superb listening (and dancing and daydreaming) experience. The songs are all tunes from the 40s, songs of missed loved ones and happier times. Warning! After listening to this, you will want more Rosemary Clooney! Since hearing "For The Duration", I have added four other Rosemary Clooney CD's to my collection. "For the Duration" is a must-have CD for anyone who loves beautiful music beautifully performed.
