I downloaded this cd off the internet when it came out back in like 02 or something. I listened to it so much it got beat up and skipped alot like a year and a half ago. It was rereleased in a sick new package with a dvd recently.
The package is a simple chip board sleeve with minimal text and graphics, really nice. The CD in addition to the Duration project has Camino, Noise Complaint, The Secret that Houses Keep, and Broken Mirror.
I guess the premise of the CD is that Sixtoo made the tracks and rerecorded them in public spaces where he made street art on tons of outdoor panels and covers that he uninstalled brought home and markered up and then reinstalled. The tracks are all really nice, the cd is just plain old good musical beats, great to listen to walking around in the city.
The dvd: awesome. The dvd follows the artist uninstalling and then installing the freshly done pieces in the streets, then tons of great art on trains and on buildings, and in exhibitions with the cd as a background. It is unbelievable how talented this dude is and how nice the art is. The dvd is worth it alone. There are also picture galleries of the art.
This might be the best cd I got this year because of the exceptional quality of the whole package, and I've gotten alot of cds this year.

Did you see that? Sixtoo just flew over your head, wearing a cape and mask and tights. This man is a hero. This album is his heroine. It's like traffic without lights and cars--it's amazing. Purely instrumental laced with some of the sickest samples in history that are of an intellectual nature. It's like sci-fi in music. It's like calling the holes swiss cheese and calling the cheese holes. You have no idea.

It clearly has a more hip-hop feel to it than "Chewing On Glass" where he breaks into the Ninja Tune spirit of experimental chaos. I think he may have recorded this in the future and brought it back to the past, at least that is what I gather from the samples. It is hardly spaceage or futuristic sounding however, so don't get that impression. But remember when DJ Shadow sampled all those lines from sci-fi movies like "Brainstorm"? That's what this album reminds me of.

Duration is Sixtoo behind the boards for a rollicking fifty- eight minutes. The beats are so tightly orchestrated that at times the album sounds as though it was recorded on one take. The album starts off at a slower pace, heavily utilizing various movie and television soundbites, along with traffic noise (check the liner notes on his last vocal album Antagonist SurvivalKit for how he achieved this effect)but gains momentum... and the last quarter of the album is off the hook.

Its difficult to pick a favourite track...especially since most are segmented anyhow, but "The Secrets That Houses Keep" is my favourite. There are three beats on it alone that Sixtoo contributed to Sage Francis' "Personal Journals" album ("Crack Pipes, "Different" and "Pitchers of Silence").

This album is a triumph for Sixtoo, and as he puts it, really set the groundwork for his Ninja Tune debut Chewing On Glass and Other Miracle Cures along with the new direction his artistry has taken (although I would personally argue that his Villain Acclerate collaboration with Stigg shares more similarities with that album). It is a shame that Amazon.com does not have Antagonist Survivalkit or Almost A Dot on the Map.. in their catalogue. I also wish that Anticon would re-release Songs I hate and other People Moments! C'mon Sole!!

Duration proves Sixtoo's merit as a bonafide producer, and is as great an achievement as Dj Shadow's "Endtroducing", Controller 7's "The Left Handed Straw", Jel's "Ten Seconds", or more recently "No More Wig for Ohio" by Odd Nosdam.
