Book Description

Durian is extensively grown in tropical regions, the major producers being Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines. The tree is also grown in northern Australia, some South American countries and in Africa. Although to many its smell is notoriously offensive, its taste can become a passion and it is one of the most popular fruits in South-East Asia. This book is the first comprehensive, scientific volume to be published in English on this king of tropical fruit. It provides information on the biology, propagation and use of the fruit, and descriptions of the scientific basis of production practices and orchard management, as well as post-harvest processing. It will be a unique resource for horticulture and botanical libraries and for students of tropical horticulture worldwide.

Review

"Gathers available information on the durian fruit of Southeast Asia, which is known for its nutritional flesh, thorny appearance, and strong odor. The authors (Kasetsart University, Thailand) review the fruit's history, areas of production, phenological development, techniques for propagation and pruning, orchard pests, post-harvest technology, products made from the fruit, and its marketing in various countries. Eight pages of color photographs are provided at the end."--SciTech Book News

3.0 out of 5 stars Durian book, April 26, 2010

This review is from: Durian: (Paperback)
Very informative book for the grower or real officionado. However the price is very steep for its size and number or pages. You would have to rate this book on quality and not quantity although more could have been made of it. Growing areas including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Brunei Darussalam and Singapore are covered. Statistics go up to 1996 but mainly up to 1992. The number of coloured photos is limited to eight pages at the back only. My feeling is that there should have been many more images through out the book. It is written in a very academic way much like a University thesis. If you are not interested in maps, charts and tables then this is not the book for you. I give it a three rating only because of the information content which I found useful. But it is lacking in other aspects.
