Grade 3-5-This book effectively describes some of the historical events leading up to the Depression, the impact it had on the lives of young people, and the subsequent economic recovery. Organization is a strength, as is the layout, which includes period photos that relate directly to the text on the facing page. The glossary contains easy-to-understand definitions and pronunciation guides. Key words are printed in bold type, followed by a pronunciation guide, and defined within the text as well. Although the amount of information is limited, readers receive a good introduction to the topic and a foundation upon which to build further knowledge. A useful resource for older elementary students who are reading below grade level.

Lisa grew up in Michigan. When she wasn't reading, she spent time skating, swimming, and engaged in other outdoor activities. Her interests include psychology, history, camping, boating, hiking, and natural science which find an outlet in both her fiction and nonfiction. She combines these interests with photography in creative writing workshops for children. These students inspire her to continue writing.

I just had the pleasure of meeting this author at a the Michigan Reading Associations Annual Conference and these books, the entire series are just great. They have beautiful pictures and are a very easy read (@800 words). They are also broken up into short "chapters" so even children who have a difficult time reading feel as if they have accomplished something.
