3.0 out of 5 stars razor sharp edges
This seems like a good product, however be careful in first handling it.
There were razor sharp edges, where the molds sections meet, one of which
nicked my finger. After the edges were filed down, it would appear to be
usable.

No one likes to use a bedpan, but sometimes they are necessary, particularly if you are caring for a loved one at home. Bedpans are a relatively cheap item, and with most you get what you pay for. This one is more costly, but the quality is much better, meaning it will last longer and not break or crack, which is a problem with many after minimal reuse. (Obviously, breakage is a concern because if the plastic cracks, you have a mess in the bed to care for.)

There are 3 types of bedpans: a "fracture pan," which is used for people with hip fracture, hip replacement, pelvic fracture and the like. This bedpan is comfortable for the patient but does not hold a lot..I estimate 500cc (1 pint) or less. The next type is a "pontoon" bedpan. It looks much like this one, but the center of the inside is hollowed out, leaving an oval-shaped area to collect elimination. This model holds about 800 to 900 cc (just under a quart) without spilling, but you've got to be careful when removing it.

This bedpan is the third type. It is called a "saddle" pan. It resembles the old-fashioned metal bedpans in shape. The entire inner surface is open, so it will hold a large quantity of elimination (probably about 2000cc; much more than you need unless you are emptying a full catheter bag) without spilling. Because the plastic is of good quality, it should support the weight of a large person and withstand repeated use without cracking and spilling.

Now that you know all that you never wanted to know about bedpans, you may need to know about quantity of elimination. Most people feel the urge to void when their bladders contain approximately 150cc to 250cc, or 5 to 8 ounces. Many people can hold 300 cc (10 ounces) to 500 cc (approx 16 ounces) before the bladder can contain no more and empties involuntarily. A few can hold up to a quart comfortably, but much depends on age, neurological disease, and individual factors. When selecting a bedpan, you also have to consider patient comfort, the durability of the unit, and the size of the patient. If you have trouble with a plastic bedpan sticking to the skin (which is a problem with many patients, particularly those of size), dust the edges with a very light dusting of baby powder before inserting it.

IMO, this unit gets an A+ for comfort, durability, patient size, and quantity it holds, and is well worth the price. No one wants to discuss bedpans, let alone learn the above. However, to be an informed consumer, you may find yourself in a position to purchase a bedpan, and it helps to know the pros and cons. Life can be fickle, and you may suddenly find yourself in a situation in which this becomes a necessary item in the care of yourself or a loved one.

I highly recommend this unit, and have shopped extensively for a similar bedpan. Of the various saddle-type pans, I believe this is most durable (aside from the uncomfortable, cold, old metal type). Of the durable pans available, amazon's price is the most competetive that I could find.

I depend on amazon's consumer ratings when I purchase items, and because I am a nurse, I decided to review the bedpan; an item that I have purchased that is one of the "unmentionables" that most people do not want to discuss, let alone review. This is a good value for your hard-earned dollars. Best wishes in the care of your home care patient!

2011 Update: The review above was written in 2007. At the time, I noted there were 3 different types of bedpans. This is no longer correct. A fourth type entered the market several years ago. An amazon search for a "bariatric bedpan" will bring it up. A bariatric bedpan is manufactured for persons over 300 pounds, although some people of normal size use them for comfort. The bariatric bedpan is wider and lower than this model. It will hold about a quart of liquid.

The greatest drawback to the bariatric device is that there are no side coverings, such as in the Duro-Med bedpan above. This means that it spills much more easily when full. You may also find your fingers in the contents when removing it, so be sure to wear gloves! Despite the drawbacks, it is very comfortable for persons of size! As for durability and comfort for an average sized person, I continue to believe that the Duro-Med (the bedpan described on this page) is the best on the market!

This is sturdy, and long lasting. The disposable are very cheap and breakable. Try this one, it will last.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Bedpan as stated by others AGREED, November 19, 2009

This bedpan is the finest you will find anywhere. The quality of the unit is top notch. It is autoclavable just like a stainless steel or ceramic bed pan. It is designed using the same layout as the high quality steel and ceramic pans but is warmer and easier to sit on than either.

I have purchased more than 30 different bedpans and tested everyone (my wife is the tester as she requires it). There is simply no question about the quality and sturdiness of this unit. I paid over 40 dollars initially and was not upset once we started using it. Compared to a $5 bedpan this is worth $100. That is because it will last forever and will be easy to properly clean.

I even clean it by hand first and then put it in the dishwasher. I then run the dishwasher empty a few times but it is no problem. I use the highest settings because it seems to have no issues with the heat.

If you need a bedpan this one is it.

By the way there is another unit that looks almost exactly the same but as a little cleft for the tailbone. It is pretty much the same unit but an older version.

I just received this bed pan. The first thing I noticed were the sharp edges like another reviewer noted, and filed them down. Then I noticed the tailbone depression in the back like another reviewer noted was in the old style. Finally I noticed the styling was different than pictured with the item. Amazon is shipping old stock. I'm in a quandry because my mom is coming home from the hospital in 2 days, and I need to exchange this, which will take more than 2 days.

Bought for a friend and this has been a godsend! For a large person with extremely limited mobility this is the answer. It replaced one that had cracked within a couple of months of use and she had been pinched more times than she could count. I researched what was available and decided this one sounded like a good bet. Wow! Was I ever right on that call!!! She actually misses it when she has had to be hospitalized for a few days. She says it is way more comfortable feeling than even the stainless ones she has used before. I would recommend this item to anyone in need of such a product and the price is good for most any pocketbook!Duro-Med Deluxe Autoclavable Bedpan

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as nice as pictured, June 10, 2011
This review is from: Duro-Med Deluxe Autoclavable Bedpan (Health and Beauty)
The bed pan that I got was somewhat different from the one shown in the ad. This one is made very thick plastic and would never need to be replace. The reason I gave it only 2 stars is because it has sharp edges on the front and it could cut you. The thing to do before using it would be to smooth down the sharp edges and it would be a 5 star bed pan. That's my thought about it. And I am the one using it because I am bed bound.

We bought one of these bedpans for a patient that weighs about 300 pounds. After using it regularly for over a year it is still holding up. MSED's review is right on!

I did notice that Amazon now has a new (to me at least) & unusually shaped bedpan that is supposed to have a weight capacity of 1200 pounds. It doesn't have any reviews yet, but I'd be interested in seeing reviews on it once they come in.Bedpan Bariatric 1200# Cap
