4.0 out of 5 stars Good quality for this price range., September 3, 2010

Not a heavy duty hinge but is at an excellent price. Good for lighter doors. Should not be used in an industrial or even a fire door in a residence.

My brother is in a wheelchair and our doorways are all very small. These hinges saved us a lot of money making the doorway easy for him to pass through.

I received these hinges and found them exactly as advertised. They were easy to install just make sure you note the instructions to keep and reuse the existing door hinge screws to install these. In my case I had to chisel out a little from the door and door frame as the original hinges were slightly curved on the outer edges. This was accomplished with easy though. Highly recommend them if you need the extra door width.

Had to open my door by the 2" to enable my wheelchair to go thru bathroom door. This works, with a small amount of carpentry to the door. Great product!

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy Replacement, February 24, 2010

These hinges are absolutely drop-in replacements for doors that have 3.5 inch hinges with 1/4 inch radius on the corners and standard thickness casing.

If your hinges have a larger radius, as some I have seen, then it will take a chisel or a sharp knife to remove a small amount of wood to allow the corners of hinge to fit in the mortise.

The hinges move the hinge point outside of the casing and door frames with standard thickness casing (up to about 3/4") do NOT require any wood removal for hinge installation.

The hinge hole pattern was slightly different from the 40 year old hinges they replaced, but the screw holes worked without modification.

These have to be the best kept secret in home health devices. None of my mother's home health care workers had ever heard of them. If door jambs could talk, I'm sure they are thankfull that her walker no longer bangs into them as she enters the rooms with these hinges.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!, September 17, 2007
This review is from: Duro-Med Expandable Door Hinges (1 Pair) (Health and Beauty)
These are great, basically moves the door completely out of the way leaving the entire frame space un-obstructed. The wheelchair goes through with enough room to spare!
Highly recommended and easy to install!

I must admit that I was skeptical when I ordered these hinges. However, faced with the need to widen two doorways in my parent's home to permit the easier passage of a wheelchair, and the remodeling costs that would be involved, I took the plunge. The hinges appear to be well made, fit perfectly, installed easily, operate smoothly, and most importantly they do increase the functional width of a doorway by a couple of inches. That's all I needed, so they met my expectations completely. For those who have never installed a door hinge, it is easy to convert these hinges for use on either side of the door. The pins are fluted, and offer some initial resistance, but they can easily be tapped out and installed in the other direction. These hinges will not be mistaken for designer items, but they are acceptable in appearance.

The door to my bathroom made it impossible to enter with a transfer chair without scratching and mauling the door. I considered having the enterence widened, but the cost was prohibitive. These hinges turned out to be the greatest solution and at a bargain price! The door now opens flush with the frame and although the fit is still a bit tight, I no longer scratch nor gash the door when entering. They fit perfectly, the only installation difficulty I had was removing the old hinges.

This is a wonderful product that lets me have my door back! With regular hinges, the door would not open wide enough to fit a wheelchair through, but with the hinges, there is plenty of room.

To widen a door opening a couple of inches to accommodate a wheelchair, these hinges are a cheap and easy solution. The only tools one may need other than a screwdriver is a sharp 1/4-inch chisel and a utility knife. Before ordering be sure to compare the dimensions of the existing hinges with these.
