Safeguard your family as well as provide portable power for work and play with the DuroMax XP4400 gas-powered generator, which features a 7.0-horsepower air-cooled OHV engine that cranks out 3,500 constant running watts of power (and a peak of 4,400 watts; learn more about wattage needs below). This rugged workhorse is ideal for the jobsite where powering saws, drills, and other equipment is critical, but you can also depend on it for emergencies at home--insuring your essential appliances are running smoothly, reliably, and without interruption.
This generator is EPA approved with a rating of 69 dBA for quiet operation thanks to its super-quiet muffler, and it's also safe to use in U.S. National Parks thanks to the super quiet exhaust with spark arrestor.
Note for California residents: This model is not CARB-compliant. Units sold to California must be CARB-compliant.
The XP4400 includes two 120-volt, 20-amp standard household outlets to supply power to all of your appliances as well as a powerful 120/240-volt, 30-amp twist lock outlet for high-powered tools. A 12-volt DC output with leads functions as a charger for batteries and other rechargeable devices. Overloads are never a problem with its dual 15-amp circuit breaker. A volt meter allows you to monitor your generator's output range at all times.
The exclusive DuroMax RV Switch (voltage selector) allows you to get maximum power from each of the 120-volt receptacles as well as choose between operating the generator at both 120 and 240 volts simultaneously, or at 120 only with full power.
The XP4400 features a heavy duty steel frame roll cage with four-point fully isolated motor mounts for smooth and quiet operation. This generator is also easily portable thanks to the wheel kit with large, all-terrain knobby tires that will never deflate and a flip-up, stow-away handle. You'll get up to 8 hours of run time (at 50 percent) from a 4-gallon tank of fuel. Other features include an advanced automatic voltage regulator (AVR) system and a low oil protection system which automatically shuts the generator off to protect it from any damage should it run out of oil. It's backed by a one-year limited warranty.

To determine whether a generator is appropriate for your needs, you need to first add up the wattage of tools, appliances, and motors you want to run at the same time. Then select a generator with the running wattage rating to match or exceed the total load.
Keep in mind that tools and appliances with electric motors require additional surge wattage at startup that can be double or triple the normal running wattage requirement. Look at the surge watts required and make sure you choose a generator with enough additional wattage to start them. (And remember that you're typically not starting more than half of the items at the same time.)
Here's a sampling of power ratings for common household appliances.

Just like me, always preparing for "the end". :)
Anyhow, this is a fantastic generator!! As another reviewer stated, I put gas and oil in and she fired up on the first pull!! Remarkably quiet, runs very smooth, and everything is solid on this unit! Metal gas tank WITH GAUGE, metal gas cap, the 12v DC charge pins are a GREAT addition should you need to charge a battery while running the generator. Plenty of outlets, a V gauge, breaker switch, nice On/Off switch, the wheel/handle kit is a true bonus, and it also came with a free nylon cover for when it's put away it'll look just like new! Even the paint job is nicely done. For the money you can't beat this price, especially the shipping!! Take a look around, you will NOT find a better deal on a generator with these features. It's worth noting that the system is a 4400watt PEAK load. It will maintain a 3500watt load, and the extra 900w are to handle the occasional surge when, say, a freezer or refrigerator kicks in. The manual has a nice breakdown of typical wattage draws from various home appliances so you can gauge your use accordingly. This will power all at the same time: - my chest freezer - my refrigerator - my TV/Stereo - 3 Lights - Radio (boombox) and there is still room for a few other items. Great deal overall! I also purchased a "gas station", a 15gallon cylinder with a hose/spigot, to keep on hand for any emergencies which I'd need the gen for. The seller is easily reached via phone and was very quick to ship my order out, faster than I anticipated!

Update: 02/23/09
I have run this generator for several hours each time my home has had a power failure and it starts up and performs flawlessly. It saved my basement from flooding due to a 6 hour outage during a rainstorm over the summer! This is an EXCELLENT product for the price. Someone tried to contact me via email in February and I accidently deleted your note. Please send me another email and I will be glad to answer your questions. Sincerely, Jim Nitzberg I purchased the PowerMax 4400 for emergency use and had it running for 26 flawless hours over the last weekend. This unit has an amazing number of features (other reviews have detailed them) and is very transportable. I used it to power lights, a coffee maker and radio transmitters, and the unit is very RF quiet (this is important to radio types). I found that during break-in (the first few hours) the unit burned a bit of oil (to be expected) and once the generator was running for awhile, the fuel economy went way up. The rated run time is 8 hours on a full load and mine ran for 10 hours plus on a light load, with a half tank of gas to spare. Usually when I see a product that is priced too good to be true - I stay away from it - however in this case, I am extremely surprised by the quality and workmanship of the unit. The engine sounds good (and quiet) while running. Starts easily. I hope to use it periodically for many years.

Cheap is Cheap!,

This review is from: DuroMax XP4400 4,400 Watt 6.5 HP OHV 4-Cycle Gas Powered Portable Generator With Wheel Kit (Lawn & Patio)
I purchased this generator in October 2006. It started up easily and did what is was supposed to do. Ran it every other month for 15 minutes with a load. Pulled it out of the garage this past spring, fired it up with no problem but there was no electrical output. $50 later, the repair shop says it's junk as the stator is bad and it's more to replace (if you can get it) than buy a whole new generator. So, for $400 I got something that was used for less than 2 hours and it's a boat anchor. Max Tool said, "sorry, it's out of warranty". By the way, it did arrive damaged and I was sent replacement parts. Fortunate for me, I am handy and was able to replace the capacitor, etc. on my own. Otherwise, the warranty does not cover labor. Buyer beware! It surely didn't work out for me.
