I had a harrowing experience today, which is why I am searching for Kaopectate (Kaolin pectin) right now. I want to share with you what I have learned.

Our vet from ten years ago told us that the old formula of Kaopectate, with Kaolin-pectin as the main ingredient, was safe to use with cats, but that the new formula was toxic to cats.

One of my cats recently had diarrhea, and I called our current vet to verify the information. She obviously had no clue and flatly told me that Kaopectate sold on the market today was safe for cats--and she spelled for me "bismuth salicylate", the main ingrediate in the re-formulated Kaopectate.

Not wanting to take a chance with my cat's life, I spent some time online and researched, in case my memory had failed me and this young vet was correct. But EVERYTHING I read stated that Kaopectate, as it is formulated today with "bismuth salicylate" as the main ingredient, is actually toxic to cats and dogs.

So before you give Kaopectate to your pets--even when your vet says so, double check to make sure you are using the right one.

My husband purchased this product Kaolin-pectin or kaopectate at the advice of our veterinarian for his guide dog who has end stage liver failure. The product was well packaged and arrived quickly. The product resolved the dog's diarrhea and he seemed to like the cherry flavor. We had been looking for a product that contained no other medications in it, such as is commonly found in the human form of kaopectate. We mixed the product with his dog food which worked well. The veterinarian at this company was helpful in answering my husband's questions about this product.

I raise llamas and when I need Kaopectate I use 60 cc's per animal, 2 times a day so needless to say I go through a lot! This is exactly what I was looking for, arrived on time and is doing the job.

If you have a large animal with the squirts, this product helps stop the loss.

It's not a substitute for a veterinarian though.
