As a guy who spent an entire semester of Bible College disecting the ideas behind discipleship, I have to say that Rob Bell provides a clearer picture of true biblical discipleship than I gained in an entire semester (I got an A in the class, which was no small feat). Bell's teaching shows that true discipleship does not lie in reading a bunch of Christian "self-help"...

1.0 out of 5 stars From the pit straight to DVD
As with most of the Emergent Church's Postmodern philosophy I find this DVD to be very dangerous and harmful to the Word of God and to the true Church of Christ. Rob Bell's ignorance and worldly thought shines brightly from the beginning to end. He is nothing but a wolf in sheep's clothing leading people down a path of destruction. He uses smooth words with enthusiasm and...

As a guy who spent an entire semester of Bible College disecting the ideas behind discipleship, I have to say that Rob Bell provides a clearer picture of true biblical discipleship than I gained in an entire semester (I got an A in the class, which was no small feat). Bell's teaching shows that true discipleship does not lie in reading a bunch of Christian "self-help" books or carrying the spiritual discipline of a monk, but rather in ordinary men and women discovering the Jesus of the Scriptures and attempting to be like Him. Yes we still see Jesus as our Savior and the Rescuer of our souls, but starting to see Him as Rabbi, as Teacher, changed everything for me. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disciples of Jesus, June 12, 2006
This review is from: Dust 008---Rob Bell (DVD)
Excellent DVD! - only about 20min. long, great for discussion after watching. It is the 8th DVD in the Rob Bell series. The whole series is excellent although each DVD is a different topic.

Watch this DVD if you want to learn more about the disciples from a Hebrew perspective? This is a quick little video where Rob Bell gives us alot to think about.

You will learn ...

why the disciples were so quick to follow Jesus and leave fishing behind,

why Peter was so eager to walk on water too,

what a Talmid is,

what it means to be "covered in the dust of your rabbi" (hence the title "Dust"),

that we can be as impacting to others as the disciples were if we live our lives as reflections of Jesus Christ

the small things are what matter most.

This is my favorite nooma dvd so far (I've watched the first 8). This is what I look for from Rob Bell, an intelligent message rich with cultural information from that time which gives me insight into some biblical story that I didn't have before. He explains the role of a rabbi in 1st century Israel and uses this info to shed new light on the actions of Jesus' disciples. A video that has life changing possibility - I highly recommend this one! Like # 7, Luggage, this has a surprise ending but in this case it's a much pleasanter surprise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dust -- A Small Group Leader's Review..., August 19, 2007
This review is from: Dust 008---Rob Bell (DVD)
Dust is one of the longer Noomas. It is the film version of a teaching Rob Bell once gave at Willow Creek. It was then expanded into a chapter in Bell's book, Velvet Elvis.

It is also, in my opinion, one the strongest of all the Noomas.

How do you see God?

Do you think of yourself as a disciple?

These are the two main themes of Dust. Jesus is presented as he first appeared to his original disciples--as a Rabbi calling us to come and follow him. Through this picture, we then learn what it meant/means to truly follow Christ.

I have now shown Dust to three small groups or studies that I lead or once led. This teaching really impacts people.

It makes some people think of God in ways they had not previously.

It spurs some to do deeper in their discipleship.

It always--ALWAYS leads to great conversations.

I cannot recommend Dust enough. This is one of the greatest presentations in an already great small group curriculum. I give it my highest recommendation.

Rob Bell is so good at getting his point across. A point about Peter I never heard before. Trying to walk on water the way his Rabbi did.

As anyone who is involved in worship will know: ideas and decent gambits are hard to come by. Personally, I was at a loss as to a sermon about discipleship, and had run through my commentaries and books to no avail.

Luckily, I attended a bible study with this on and was inspired (having never seen Nooma b4). Although it is only 14 minutes, the material on the DVD is rich in content and is performed by the truly masterful Rob Bell. Rob Bell makes talks on the Bible seem easy and, best of all, understands that rare quality in preaching: the value of... pausing!

This particular DVD is based on the story of Jesus walking on the water and the story of Jesus calling the disciples (Mark 1:14-20). Not to plot spoil, this story talks about who the disciples were and has lots of detail about Jewish education in the 1st century. Although it doesn't sound thrilling, the combination of interesting information and the 1st class preaching of Rob Bell make a tawdry subject into something incredibly compelling...

Anyhow, further to the sermon I did (which went down a treat), I discovered that my local church doesn't just have one of these DVD's; it has the full set for all worship leaders to use! After asking around, I found they use little else and yet they are the most successful church in my local town.

Make of this what you will but, if you do just one thing in response to this DVD, get a copy of either this or one of the Nooma series and see for yourself. I promise - you won't be disappointed...

5.0 out of 5 stars Understanding Jesus as Rabbi, April 26, 2010

This review is from: Dust 008---Rob Bell (DVD)
We have watched this DVD twice in the last week and the first session of In the Dust of the Rabbi. This DVD amplifies the first session of In the Dust of the Rabbi. Rob Bell explains the wonder of being a disciple of a rabbi. I'll never look at being a disciple in quite the same way. I strongly recommend this video to all of Christ's followers.

Rob Bell does an amazing job at demystifying who the disciples were warts and all and revealed that what's even more amazing than us believing in Jesus/Jesus believed in us.

5.0 out of 5 stars stimulating insights, July 15, 2009
This review is from: Dust 008---Rob Bell (DVD)
"Dust" has a bite that lasts a long time. What Rob reveals about the training that went into the recuitment of boys, young men, to become rabbis is remarkable. The implications for an appropriate response to Jesus are very motivational.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you only buy 1 Nooma video, this is the ONE!, February 19, 2009
This review is from: Dust 008---Rob Bell (DVD)
I love this Nooma Video the best. I own them all and watch them lots with my kid. Rob Bell is the coolest! Oh yeah, and he actually knows his Bible stuff and is very well spoken. My second favorite thing from Rob Bell is "Everything is Spiritual". Wonderful DVD and very insightful. My third recommendation Nooma is Breathe or Kickball is fun for kids.
