4.0 out of 5 stars Great for hard surfaces.
I live in a 3 story house with mostly hardwood floors. This hand vac has been great for slurping up the dust that accumulates on the staircases and for picking up lint and dust on ceramic tile in the bathrooms and laundry. For dense carpeting, it's only so-so. If you have mostly hard floor coverings, this unit should do the trick.

You may get sucked in by the cheap price of this hand vac, but there are better ones on the market.

Some issues:
1) Suction is anemic. Unless you are picking up stuff on a hard surface, you will have little luck. Works best picking up tiny pebbles on rubber mats in cars.
2) Cleaning out the gunk is impossible without spraying dust everywhere.

3) The charge doesn't last long. After a few minutes, you'll be back to the charger.

Unfortunately, with all hand vacs, especially low-priced ones, you have major trade-offs. I've found that the ones that plug into the wall outlets have much better suction, but that can defeat the convenience of a cordless vac, for places such as your car's interior.

This gets two stars instead of one because it can fill a need for someone who rarely needs to use a hand vac and simply wants the cheapest one around.

Just don't say I didn't warn ya!

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work very well., December 30, 2001

I was just completely unimpressed with this unit. Was a gift, and it just isn't very useful, can hardly clean up anything beyond a few crumbs on the couch, etc. Wanted to use it to clean the stairway, but immediately realized how foolish this is with this device.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleased as Punch with My Little Devil, May 22, 2004
This review is from: Dust Devil Rechargeable Hand Vac, Red (Kitchen)
I really like my little Dust Devil. I've owned mine for over a year and use it on an almost daily basis. We get along quite well and he does his job like a good boy. He eagerly cleans up scattered kitty litter, pet hair off the bed comforter and sofa, and various other small messes made by me or one of the critters. Nor has he ever ran out of energy before the job is done. Also, easy to clean, lightweight, simple to use, and in ravishing red - the Dust Devil sufficiently suits my needs.

There are more powerful hand helds on the market and this little guy is certainly not going to do the job of a full sized vacuum, but for those casual spills that go along with daily life, I recommend this product wholeheartedly.

P.S. Especially good for those with pets and/or kids.

4.0 out of 5 stars For the Grandchildren, April 25, 2002

I purchased this product because of my Grandchildren and found that it works great. It picks up all their cookie and bread crumbs and my Grandson thinks it is great fun to do it himself, an added bonus.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lasted less than 4 months!, January 28, 2004

The Dust Devil by Dirt Devil worked great for the 4 months I was able to use it. It suddenly stopped charging and eventually ran out of juice.

I have put this into my "Do not buy" list for breaking after an estimated 30 uses.
