Originally published in three volumes by the Institution of Chemical Engineers from 1985 to 1988, this guide formed the first authoritative and comprehensive guide for dust explosion prevention and protection for engineers, scientists, safety specialists, and managers. This guide is a compilation of current best practices for measures to prevent dust explosions from occurring, and, if they do occur, to protect the plant and personnel from their destructive effects by applying the techniques of explosion containment, explosion suppression, and explosion venting.

Included is new material on the containment and venting of dust explosions. This guide helps those responsible for the design, supply, and operation of process plants to comply with the provisions of health and safety legislation. Dust explosions can occur anywhere where combustible powders are handled, such as coal, wood, flour, starch, sugar, rubber, plastics, some metals, and pharmaceuticals.

Three classic volumes combined into one handy guideContains all of the best practices for preventing dust explosionsIncludes in-depth material that outlines how to protect the plant and its resources from explosions

Review

...brings together the latest research results and recommendations for safe practice in the handling of explosible dusts and will undoubtedly become the new bible for practitioners, both equipment manufacturers and users, in this field. -Richard Roberts, tce-July 2002

The strength of the guide comes in its use of logic diagrams to help the reader identify the relevant aspects for particular situations. -Richard Roberts, tce-July 2002

...the authors are to be congratulated on maintaining the ICHemE tradition of producing guidance in an easily readable and practical form. For anyone involved with dust explosion prevention and protection, whether new to the topic or existing practitioners, this book is a must.
-Richard Roberts, tce-July 2002

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent companion to Eckhoff, December 5, 2003

This review is from: Dust Explosion Prevention and Protection: A Practical Guide (Hardcover)
John Barton has written a very worthwhile reference book on dust explosions. It is not a book to replace Rolf Eckhoff's "Dust Explosions in the Process Industries", rather, it is a companion. Dust explosions are complex and those of us who work in the field would agree that there is much about them that is not well understood. Barton has given the subject a new look and particularly for those of us in the USA, a useful insight into the logic and approach of our European colleagues. The logic diagrams alone are worth the price of the book. There is more meat in his treatment of suppression systems than I have seen anywhere else in print. The discussion of vent sizing is excellent and I happen to agree with Barton that the FMRC model has advantages over the others and should be more widely avialable. In addition to vent sizing there is also a very useful discussion of related supplementary design considerations. Barton also covers propagation between linked vessels in a very thorough manner. The illustrations are clear, the photos support the text well and are very useful. The book is well organized, well researched, and easy to use. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Practices at your Hands, October 18, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dust Explosion Prevention and Protection: A Practical Guide (Hardcover)
Dust Explosion Prevention and Protection is not just the name of this excellent book. But, for those process engineers like me that handle with energetic materials, it is a question of implementing the best practices. Together with the other titles that I have acquired recently (Guidelines for Chemical Process Quantitative Risk Analysis - AIChE; Prevention of Fires And Explosions In Dryers - John Abbott), they all constitute a good basis for starting any kind of technical analysis (design; troubleshooting and/or accident analysis). The Logical Diagrams, as mentioned by other colleagues, they are a must! Saving time and helping to organize the tasks involved.
