Dusty Drake rides in with attitude and style!,
This review is from: Dusty Drake (Audio CD)
This is an album for the working class of America, no doubt about it. "Too Wet to Plow" is about what goes on with farmers' sons when they AREN'T out plowing the fields...maybe even a few farmers' daughtes as well..."Not Bad for A Good Ole Boy" has a special meaning for me, as it is about an average guy from Illinois who lives a happy life. "Smaller Pieces" is about a guy who's saying "Hell why not/What's another goodbye." That's the attitude to have during a breakup."One Last Time" is an emotional song that kicked me when I heard it. The ending sort of surprised me (don't know why). "Going on Eighteen" is for those old guys who still feel young (hell, I'm not even eighteen yet, so I can't really comment on this track with experience; it sounds good, though). "The Hard Way" (penned by Jeffrey Steele) is sort of "bland," but the dueling fiddle and penny whistle give it a cool twist. "Just Can't Take a Train" is a bit overlong, about a guy who can no longer ride trains because, you guessed it, his gal got on one and left with his heart. "The Wish" is a sentimental number about a kid who wishes he'd won the ballgame, contrasted with a handicap kid who wished he could've LOST the ballgame. "And Then" starts out as a sentimental, almost disgusting ballad, but kicks in with a rock-em-sock-em look at a normal work day. It's actually one of my favorites on here. "Ain't Nobody's Business" is a biker's anthem, and a cool rock number. "Radio" is a bit bland, about a guy's dreams of becoming something more than he is through, you guessed it, his radio. Yes, this album has its flaws. But that's understandable, for a debut. Let's just say this: is has fewer flaws than MOST debut albums. Drake's been hitting the honky-tonks for a while, and he's honed that baritone of his into a lethal weapon. His songwriting isn't outstanding, but it is slightly above (or below, depending on how you look at it) par. Really, this album is promising: a new star is born in Dusty Drake. This is music for the people by a REAL PERSON--the way country music is supposed to be.

I was first in line this morning at 6am at Wal-mart to get my hands on a copy of the Dusty Drake CD. This has been 15 years in the making for me. I have been a fan that long!I have been a HUGE fan of Dino Buffalini/Dusty Drake since I was a Senior in High School back in 1988. I was fortunate enough to see him May 24th, at the Y108 Hot County Jams at Post Gazette Pavillion, here in Pittsburgh. Had 2nd row seats. His musical performace then, moved me as much as his CD today! "And Then" was a favorite, before I even got the CD. I can't stop listening to it! "The Hard Way" and "Radio" have become my new favorites. It is just awesome! I promise, it is well worth the money. Take a chance on Dusty, you won't be disappointed! Dusty I am so proud!
