Made up of biographies, narrative art histories, and subject entries covering the late 1400s to the present, this source, edited by a professor of Renaissance and baroque art and architecture at the University of Utah, is the first reference survey of Dutch art as a whole. Once past the dreadful reproductions, one comes across quite interesting entries that feature helpful See also references and bibliographies. The entries are signed, and the list of contributors and their affiliations is impressive. Though some of the entries are peculiarly titled?e.g., "Monuments to Artists," "North American Painting, Dutch Influences"?the index proves to be most practical in locating specific works. A glossary would have been helpful, but this is still a worthwhile purchase for any academic, special, or public library interested in Dutch art.?Jennifer L.S. Moldwin, Detroit Inst. of Arts Lib.

Unique. The coverage is enormous. The work is extremeley well organized as well as fulsome. This project is unprecedented in scope and depth. One cannot help but come away with a sense of how rich and diverse the field is.
