Wow! Where the heck did this come from? There isn't one note here without energy, direction, and passion. The New York Phil sounds great as always but with an added layer of warmth especially in the strings and brass. For a long time, Solti's recording with Chicago was by far my favorite but I think this has overtaken it. The major difference between the two is the largo. Simply put, it has never been played better than on this recording. Thomas Stacy's english horn solo is beautifully phrased with a huge and warm timbre. The finale rips through with great vigor and intensity but is never out of balance. I could literally exhaust my vocabulary of hyperbole but I will end it here. Best recording of this great work!

5.0 out of 5 stars First steps, December 12, 2005
This review is from: Dvorák: Symphony No. 9 'From the New World'; Slavonic Dances (Audio CD)
I believe that this is one of the best albums that I have ever had a chance to listen to. Altdough I think that the part with the Slavic dances isn't as good as the Symphony, the album in all is very, very, very good.
I reccomend it to all who want to take their first steps into classical music. Symphony No9, and especially this recording of it (perfect sound, perfect performance),will definately make you want more of classical music. Buy it, enjoy it!!

This Dvorak CD is pretty good. The orchestra is New York's, fitting, since Dvorak's New World Symphony premiered there.

This happens to be my favorite symphony, and this rendition does not disappoint. The changes in dynamics are effective, and for its discount price, it's a good bargain.

I was lucky enough to hear this Symphony in Indianapolis with my sister. She loved it so much, she ended up ordering it, too (and Peggy's no big fan of classical music).

5.0 out of 5 stars How about a NIce 30 pound piece of T-BONE!!!!!!!!!, May 12, 2006
This review is from: Dvorák: Symphony No. 9 'From the New World'; Slavonic Dances (Audio CD)
This Dvorak ninth will rip your freakin' head off man!!!!!!!!!!
Masur and the Nypo play like demons with a technical skill that is devastating especially with the fact that this is a live performance.
This is PURE POWER with the timpani placed forward so that the strokes pound the livin' crap out of your freakin' noggin!!!!!
Masur takes a direct approach to the score with a careful ear for detail accompanied with eloquent expressiveness resulting in a truly memorable performance.
This is the ninth to own if you want sheer orchestral dynamite,
expressive though sensible phrasing, and spontaneous uninhibited music making magic.
You can get this superlative recording right now and all for the price of a big mac with a large frie and chocolate shake but without the heart stopping cholesterol and fat.
SO go ahead and take a big bite of this 30 pound piece of juicy T-BONE STEAK because it's so GOOOOOOOD!!!!!!!!!!!
MUNCH!!!!! MUNCH!!!!!!! CHOMP!!!!!! CHOMP!!!!!!!!

Great symphony music and I love the whole piece. Very classic tones that I hear a lot in different movies and occasions.

Even though Dvorak was not born in the U.S. his expression of his love of country has endeared us to his works.
