Beautiful concerto I discovered when studying various famous violin pieces. A lovely work, similar in tone to Tchaikovsky's famous opus. Perlman's playing is, as expected, flawless and inspired. A terrific recording for an affordable price. And the Romance is also a gem!

I have to say, I was a little disappointed by this recording by the usually excellent Perlman. I also own the "Perlman Edition" CD with the paganini violin concerto, and on that recording Perlman's technique is flawless and his playing very emotive and tasteful. I can't help but find fault with this recording of the violin concerto however; it seems a bit sloppy and not as thought-through as it could be. In particular, the 1st mvmt contains quite a few notes noticeably out of tune and a few passages that seem a bit off. Besides these drawbacks though, it is still a very good performance. While for the most part the LSO plays beautifully, they are a bit sloppy in places, most noticeably on the first two notes, in which the timpani and strings are not very well in unison like they should be.

While a bit slow in parts, the romance is beautifully played and moves me every time I listen. Both the sonatina and the romantic pieces are standalone pieces in themselves that Perlman plays superbly.

Despite the slight faults in the violin concerto, overall it is a good recording, and i would still recommend this CD to anyone looking for all of these great dvorak violin compositions in one package. If looking for the best recording of the violin concerto out there, though, I might look elsewhere..

I actually own an earlier disc that contains the performances of the Violin Concerto and Romance that are included on this release, but since that older recording appears to be out of print, I thought it more appropriate to put my review here. I can't speak for Four Romantic Pieces and the Sonatina, but the other two works are to my untrained ear performed very well indeed. The music itself is Romantic gold, and it's a wonder to me that the concerto doesn't hold a more prominent place in the general consciousness. From the first movement -- which is pure Dvorak distillate -- to the playful finale, it's a joyous ride all the way. The wistful Romance, meanwhile, is rendered as supple yet delicate. Marvelous stuff, not to be missed.

Itzhak Perlman gave an outstanding performance of Dvorak's violin concerto. I recently heard this concerto played at a concert hall, and it was very good, but this recording tops it and stands in a class of its own.

Perlman playing Dvorak makes for beautiful music. I especially like the Romantic Pieces but all 12 tracks are good. Opted for free shipping and still received it very quickly. Great addition to my collection.
