Butterworth's "Dvorak"--a great little book,
By Jay Howard (Virginia, Minnesota, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dvorak: His Life and Times (Composer's Life & Times) (Hardcover)
I was looking for a book on Dvorak's life that was not a critical analysis of his compositions (I am able to do that on my own), but would give a good discussion of who he was as a person in the context of his times, his music contemporaries, and his nationality. This book puts Dvorak's compositions into that context. It has excerpts from his correspondence with friends such as Brahms as well as his family and with his publishers. It gives a good discussion of his two years in the US (both New York and Spillville), and it has an abundance of photos from the period. Butterworth's book was just what I was looking for.
