5.0 out of 5 stars Rudolf Firkusny on this DVD ! August 17, 2009
I don't see anywhere anything about the most important feature of this Rudolfinum concert in Prague. It includes a good amount of playing by Rudolf Firkusny, visiting his native country, and playing a Humoresque, the song accompaniments, and a mvt. of a piano trio. Firkusny was a great artist in every conceivable way. Please also see his DVD of a recital with violinist Josef Suk (Dvorak's great-grandson) and another with the Dvorak Piano Concerto. All of these were filmed in the "Carnegie Hall" of the Czech Republic, the Rudolfinum. Firkusny left Prague because of the political turmoil, as did his friends Martinu and Rafael Kubelik. He toured the world playing with all the major orchestras, lived in NYC, and taught a few select students at Juilliard. The concert is good. He is great. There is nothing stylistically "czech" about much of the others' playing! (can you spot a TINY memory lapse in the Humoresque?)

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good concert but poor video quality. November 29, 2013

This is such a nice concert with great artists. Just wonder why such low video quality, whether due to the master recording or the DVD production. I will buy a blu-ray if the video can be better.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dvorak in Prague July 27, 2012
Verified Purchase
A 1993 recording and in terms of image quality it shows. The performers ? The Boston Symphony is a shadow when compared to the modern European orchestras. Yo Yo Ma was the star of the evening - played Klid from the Bohemian Forest with great interpretation and feeling. von Stade's interpretation of Rusalka - Song to the Moon was when compared to Fleming's interpretation at the Waldbuhne in 2010 was like chalk and cheese. She sang it like a song that had to be sung - nothing more. Fleming made one feel the emotion of love that I think Dvorak wanted to bring across. Overall a great disappointment as regards quality on all levels. Not money well spent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Irena Tully, Impulse Films & Prestige Entertainment August 5, 2007
The selected works of Antonin Dvorak - one of the most significant composers of all times - are performed here by the most renowned classical artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Frederica von Stade, Boston Symphony Orchestra and Seizi Ozawa - making this collection a stupendous experience. The music is transcendent, and the performances are brilliant.

2.0 out of 5 stars Might as well watch PBS January 22, 2013

I really enjoyed Yo Yo Ma's short performance on Botti's Boston bluray. So I searched for some others.

My displeasure with this DVD is with the sound and picture quality. The performances could have been the best in the world, but I couldn't tell the difference. I received two DVDs on the same day, this one and Grieg, Chopin & Saint Saens Piano Concertos / Previn, Rubinstein, London Symphony Orchestra (2006). The difference in audio and picture quality between the two is vast. I hope to find another video performance, preferably bluray, of Yo Yo Ma and Perlman.
