Though I purchased to hear Antonin Dvorak's "Te Deum" after reading about its beauty, the first thing you should know about the disc is that the performance of the artist's most famous work, the "New World" Symphony, also found here is terrific. Vaclav Neumann, the conductor leading this effort, is an uneven conductor but one who, when he's on, produces riveting and memorable performance. This Dvorak disc falls in to this top echelon of Neumann performances. The "New World Symphony" seems to be a work that evokes very different interpretations from performers. Neumann's take - which is expressive and exciting throughout - emphasizes the coloristic contrasts between the different sections and the emotional drive of the music. I can't claim to have heard all recordings of the "New World" but have always thought the Fritz Reiner/Chicago Symphony interpretation was at the very top rung in terms of originality and depth. This Neumann is right up there with it for a very impressive achievement. You could buy this "New World", never get another one, and not regret it.

I try to listen to the terrific Czech soprano Gabriela Benackova whenever I can - everyone needs rules in my life and that's one of mine. After reading raves about Dvorak's "Te Deum", I jumped at the chance to hear her taking the lead in this 20-minute long choral work. She is at the peak of her powers in this 1982 recording and the "Te Deum" lives up to its reputation. A melodic interjection by the chorus and strings in the Lento (track 6) is as ravishing a melody as I have heard from the pen of Dvorak, which is high praise. The soprano melody in the opening Allegro and the concluding Lento are also very beautiful. This is a sacred work you will not want to miss.
