Editorial Reviews

Review

Dorothy C. Bass
"In this beautiful book, a vast communion of artists, theologians, historians, poets, and worshipers surrounds one letter from the Apostle Paul. Rich selections from the work of these witnesses provide varied opportunities for both newcomers and lifelong Bible readers to envision and encounter God's Word in fresh ways. When received with attention and pondered in prayer, the resources gathered here can expand imagination, deepen discernment, and encourage faithful living."

Eugene H. Peterson
"American Christians are in too much of a hurry. We miss out on most of what is right in front of us. When this 'most' is in the Bible, our faith and obedience and prayer are impoverished. This 'conversation' with Philippians slows us down to a stroll so we can take it all in — God's word not as instruction but as companion. All of us need this."

Richard Mouw
"This wonderful commentary makes Philippians come alive in new ways. The combination of rich visual experience with creative written commentary has made me a more engaged biblical 'dweller'!"

Jeremy Begbie
"This beautifully produced book, through its skillful interweaving of images and texts, allows the Apostle Paul to speak in fresh and unexpected ways. A striking and original initiative."

William Dyrness
"Not much in our frazzled life encourages us to slow down and savor God's presence in Scripture. The images, prayers, and reflections in this beautiful book work this miracle. Dwelling with Philippians is slow food for the spirit! Keep it beside you, pray with it, give it to your friends, your family — and especially to your pastor!"

Library Journal (STARRED review)
"The illustrations are glorious, a truly evocative comment on the ancient text, and should appeal to many artists both within and without congregations."

Bible Today
"This is a remarkably beautiful book. Weaving together traditional and contemporary art, lyrics of hymns, poetry, and selections of commentary, it offers the reader a contemplative experience of Paul's letter to the Philippians. . . . This would make a great gift for a friend — or for yourself."

Religious Studies Review
"Deserves a broad readership as a biblical and liturgical resource for teachers and pastors, a textbook for course such as Pauline literature, Philippians, hermeneutics, and worship arts, as well as personal or collective Bible study."

Interpretation
"A beautiful book both in the abundance of artwork included (almost 150 prints and paintings) and also in the diversity of the cultures and centuries represented in the text."

Spirituality & Practice
"This book on Paul's letter to the Philippians sets next to the interpretations stunning visual images from paintings along with poetry, prayers, and worship-related materials."

This book is not meant to be a commentary on the text of Philippians, but a companion on a spiritual journey through Philippians. The epistle is broken up into sixteen segments throughout the volume, and the goal is to help the reader SLOW DOWN, think about each paragraph from a number of different angles and using a number of different senses and mental faculties, and allow each paragraph thus to have a greater impact on the reader/pilgrim. For each segment, the following format is consistently followed: the passage is printed in full in the New Revised Standard Version; there follows a meditative reflection on the passage and a series of self-examination questions (already this book is better than almost any other devotional resource on Philippians); after this -- the point at which almost every other devotional resource ends -- this book is just beginning. The reader is treated with images of art related somehow to the themes explored in the passage, whether paintings, sculptures, stained glass, or other media. These are accompanied by poetical texts, prayers, and other written reflections, all coming together kaleidoscopically around the passage from Philippians.

Would I quibble with the choices of art or poetry on the basis of my (admittedly narrowly-focused) exegesis of Philippians? Would I take issue with some points in the devotional material? Of course I would. That's what I'm trained to do. But I stand in awe nevertheless of the thoughtfulness, no, the spiritual perspicuity that went into the formation of this volume -- and, through it, the formation of Christian souls and lives.

And so unbelievably inexpensive for such quality prints on such quality paper! (The pragmatist in me just had to throw that it.) Get this book. Dwell in it for the sixteen days or sixteen weeks it will take you to attend to Philippians meaningfully through it. You will be enriched.

I really, really love this book. I purchased it because I was intrigued with the concept, drawn by the artwork, and amazed that it was offered at such a reasonable price. But in addition to the artwork, which is the first thing that captures the attention, the book is enriched with countless prayers, meditations, poems, and hymn texts from ancient to contemporary, all thoughtfully chosen to accompany the texts to which they are attached. I have found it absolutely perfect for a mid-afternoon pause in the midst of my working day... it sits on my desk and each afternoon I take a few minutes to prayerfully peruse one two-page spread, which (except for introductory material) is generally devoted to ruminating on the implications of just one verse or even a particularly rich phrase. The book does a wonderful job of bringing Paul, the author, alive as a real human being in his own unique context while also illuminating varous facets of application (both personal and collective) of the biblical text. It has helped me to grow in my delight in the Lord; and what could be better than that?

We have purchased three copies of this book and have shared it with friends. In 2010 we spend three months in the book with five friends, meditating on a chapter a week, and then meeting together on Friday evenings to discuss it together. The book provided a powerful individual and collective time of meditation, prayer, and worship in the scripture. We liked it so much, that we have decided to repeat this again this year with 7 other friends. My wife and I sit with our respective copies in the morning, reading, conversing and praying together over two or three pages at a time. We then gather on Friday evenings to share how the Holy Spirit has ministered to us through all of the mediums of communication in the text. We have just finished our third week of reflection, and we have discovered new insights into the biblical text, deeper understanding of the emotional and spiritual meanings conveyed in art and song, and rich times of conversation and prayer stimulated by this beautiful work of meditation and worship. Thank you Calvin Institute for this exceptional work integrating scripture, art, song, poetry and prayer. We are enjoying it more the second time, and we hope you are creating a new volume on another biblical text to enrich our devotional and worship of the living Christ. Sherwood Lingenfelter
