With my new HD camera, I thought I would review this product that I bought for my brother's family.

I bought this mat last year and didn't think the smell was strong. I really loved it until recently I found out how harmful the material -PVC can be. I know it doesn't have lots of toxic chemicals but PVC itself is poison plastic. You can find some details at this website: [...]

I remember clearly that when I purchased the product (from [...]), it read "made of PVC" in the description. However, now when I realized that PVC is harmful and tried to check some detailed information about the mat, I couldn't find anything about PVC in the online description. All they talked about was that it "made of only Eco-Friendly materials approved by CPSIA in USA and safe standards in Europe." It's now not available at Costco.com so I can't find the description any more. Of cause you will know when you get the instruction in the package but at that point you may not want to bother to return the whole thing. Makes me wonder the reason why they hide the material information.

I have to say that there is no real safe playmat on the market, which is very sad, maybe this one is the safest, still it's made of PVC. I think we customers deserve to know what exactly was the material when the seller claims it's made of "only Eco-Friendly materials".

I bought this mat hoping it would be non-toxic. It had a strong smell (and if you get one of the "older" versions it will have a stronger smell, be slimy and have a white coating on it. I received one of the older versions and immediately called Dwinguler. As others have posted they confirmed their mat is 45% PVC and 55% plasticizer. They would not disclose what plasticizers they use (only they were safe) but did say the chemical reaction between the PVC and plasticizer did emit a toxic chemical - and that their "special processing" removed this matter. I was skeptical (*I have a chemical engineering background). PVC emits VOC's and knowing that a toxic chemical was produced as a side reaction during processing was not comforting at all. Also, they said the clear, slickness was a coating they put on to mitigate the stickiness off the mat of the machines and then they also coat it with a white detergent. They would not say what they use. They do post test results that say no harsh metals, phthalates, etc but still ... i would be skeptical of a smell from a mat where the manufacturer refuses to disclose 55% of their ingredients and admits a toxin is created during processing. I see this as the same issue with the EVA/Formaldehyde mats.

We have this mat. Our main problem with it is that it still emits a chemical smell after weeks of use. To test it yourself, put a large bowl upside down on the mat overnight so that no air can escape out. Remove it in the morning and immediately smell the inside of the bowl. You'll be surprised by the strength of the chemical smell (smells like gasoline). Whatever that chemical is, it keeps emitting into your house continuously. And if your child spends long periods of time on the mat, he/she is exposed to it the most. Until more tests are done, or healthystuff.org tests this product, I don't believe the manufacturer's claim of this mat being non-toxic. I plan to only use it occasionally outdoors in our balcony.

PS: take the raving reviews here with a grain of salt. This product is manufactured in Korea, and guess what, many reviews on Amazon have Korean names (Disclaimer: I personally have nothing against Koreans -- I have lots of Korean friends). It also ships from Seattle, and voila, many reviews are from Seattle. Their page on the well-known social networking site is monitored so if you end up asking a question that they don't like, they immediately erase your question. If you examine the posted questions more carefully, they are mostly soft-ball ones from several users with Korean names.

The Dwinguler large mat is really big and well cushioned. It's not a natural made product, but it's the best alternative on the market. I bought both the Dwinguler Mat and the Baby Care Mat with the intention of keeping them both. But the odor was too strong on the Baby Care Mat. Both mats do have an odor that needs to be aired out, but the odors were of two different types. Dwinguler was a light odor and similar to a new shower curtain. Seemed like it was from the material itself...not bad at all. Dwinguler states the odor is from being stored and is non toxic. Baby Care was a strong odor and similar to paint. The chemical smell almost gave me a headache. The listed materials are the same and the products seem really similar. Maybe Baby Care is processed differently. Not sure! All I know is the Baby Care Mat is being returned immediately. I do not want my baby near it. It really is worth the extra money for Dwinguler!

I did my research before purchasing a mat. Most mats in the US contain Formamide which can irritate the eyes and skin and even the central nervous system. It has been suggested that it should be considered a carcinogen because of it's possible links to cancer. It has been band from all children's toys in Europe and parts of Asia. This mat is a favorite by multiple countries. It's large, eco-friendly, easy to clean, thick padding, colorful designs and themes and most importantly, does not contain any threatening chemicals. Unfortunately, most US companies can get away with selling mats that contain low amounts of Formamide. Here is link with the results from multiple brands. It's astonishing that the information about this chemical is being withheld or unreleased.
