I tried several times. Couldn't pick up the plot line even though I read lots of mysteries and love them. This one wasn't good for me.

This is an old-fashioned British mystery without blood or gore, and well-written and interesting to boot. We're at the offices of Allingham Alloys, preeminent in metals R&D. "Across the waist-high partitions, from work station to work station, voices called in banter or in gloom; formulas were confirmed, theories rejected, and, from their desks, scientists came wandering down the main corridor, despairing of inspiration and desperate for coffee."

It's going to be a bad day. Allingham's head of R&D, the cantakerous, misanthropic and brilliant Basil Holbrook, has just committed suicide. Or did he? Detective Superintendent Trewley and Detective Sargeant Stone are on the case, and get a break when a bill arrives for the dead man that never should have arrived.

I much enjoyed "Dying Breath". It takes place in 1994, also its year of publication. This practically makes it a historical novel. Electric typewriters instead of computer word processing, for example.

The only thing that kept this from being 5 stars for me was that sometimes the interaction between Trewley and Stone got a little cutsey. Not flirting, that's not what I mean. But just a bit of overwriting.

An enjoyable mystery read!
