Fun mystery with new interesting setting,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dying to Fly Fish: A Max Addams Fly-Fishing Mystery (Dead Letter Mysteries) (Paperback)
This is the second Max Addams book I've read. As a flyfishman and reader of mysteries, I was immediately drawn to the books because of the fly fishing settings. I actually found the first book in the fishing section of the bookstore rather than the mystery section. The story follows the basic mystery formula: lots of suspects, false leads, and last minute plots twists. A few flaws: primarily missed opportunies or failures to ask and answer what I thought were obvious questions. Hardly a classic, but enjoyable; I'll read more of the Max Addams books as they become available. Fun, light reading for the fly fisherman to occupy his/her time when not fishing. As a fly fisherman I would like to see more reliance on Max's fly fishing expertise to solve the murder. I think the author missed a great opportunity to have a major clue linked to the first victim's fly fishing tendencies. Think woolly bugger. I noticed it right away and kept waiting for Max to pick up on it, but was disappointed when he didn't. (Email me if you want to know what I am referring to.) One pet peeve: why do some of the main characters smoke so much. I don't think it adds anything to the characters and find it annoying -- reminds me of old movies and mysteries where everybody always had a cigarette hanging out of their mouths. I don't know any fly fishermen who smoke. I think it's out of character for someone who enjoys the beauties and wonders of nature to smoke so much. David, if you're reading this, why not have Max and Stormy support each other in trying to quit smoking in your next book.
