This is a game that improves a lot as you play it, so don't be discouraged at first.

It starts off rough, where you're constantly out of stamina and clumsily swinging weapons blindly. It's by design, as you're just getting used to being in the situation as well. It improves through your skills improving, your weapons and crafting improving, and through your character's talents improving. There's some odd controls, like jump being bound to RB/R1, but they'll start to make sense eventually. The parkour aspect is tricky at first, but once you get used to it you'll appreciate it.

This game is a more serious, darker, and much more polished version of Dead Island. There isn't the same light hearted aspect that you'd find in Dead Island or Dead Rising, but the gameplay will seem familiar from Dead Island. Don't expect a huge workover of the Dead Island series, this is a comparable game. There's plenty more of this game that I'm yet to play, but the one constant is that it's improved the longer I've played it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great game January 28, 2015

Fun game. Mixes fleeing zombies and fighting them very well. There are things in the environment you can use to kill them, and there is loot everywhere so crafting is used a lot and you dont have to be super conservative with what you make.

The survivor sense is incredibly handy for finding loot, and the game makes it tense as lockpicking and some things like that dont pause the game, sometimes you have to be quick.

The grapple hook is beast, and I have an uber powerful sword, A SWORD! It electrocutes and lops heads off like a boss. Talk about fun. Have done a ton of side quests, I have to say there is a lot of variation in them they are more than just go here get this and bring back. they have a purpose, whether its someone wanting to upgrade uv lights, to making prototype bombs, to awesome blueprints, you will want to complete the side quests.

As night falls i really feel the urgency to get the heck off the street and somewhere safe. The entire game dynamic changes to something much more hostile. Would have liked the volitiles to become more challenging to avoid, but every so often they will surprise you.

How anyone can say these graphics are anything but amazing is beyond me...

I've only ran into a few minor glitches. Climbing down ladders has been risky for me... if I'm not at a perfect angle it will say hold x to grab, but i fall before actually grabbing the ladder. Also i found a room with a locked door with loot inside. Couldn't get in, but I was able to select a cabinet to search from a window. When i hit x it pulled me into the room in front of the cabinet, where I was locked in and had to quit and restart -EDIT- turns out you could get into this room from the roof.

The scores this game has been receiving from the "big review sites" has me seriously wondering if there are any reputable reviewers left. Dead Island was a buggy mess, but it was fun. Techland was branded as a developer with promise, but still B league. So how did they do with Dying Light? They knocked it out of the friggin' park.

Dying Light is a sweeping, epic, open world game. The graphics and atmosphere are the best representation of any apocalypse I've seen in a game (zombie-themed or otherwise). The melee combat is spot on, with satisfying thuds and slashes, and really interesting momentum physics and visible damage. The single player campaign is interesting and lengthy, with some great voice work from the lead and supporting players.

The game mechanics are a blast, as you slowly evolve from a clumsy scrapper to a parkour expert, zombie-slaying machine. The upgrade system is based on what you're doing, and progression is rewarding. Each new skill gives you a new tool to play's been a long time since I've felt like I was playing with a character that I could do so many things with.

If you're a fan of open world games, like me, you won't just veer off from the main veer off from all quests for awhile. I had so much fun just spending the day breaking into abandoned houses, gathering supplies, and racing back before nightfall. The campaign is good fun, but you can really make this any kind of game you imagine (people are already posting suggestions for rules to impose upon yourself to create different experiences).

Anyway, as you can tell, I liked the game :) But back to my first point...if this were put out by a different developer, the top sites would be buzzing about Game of the Year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Graphics, great gameplay and design February 1, 2015
Platform for Display:Xbox One|Verified Purchase
Though it isn't perfect, Dying light adds several different elements that create a wonderful gaming experience. You really feel immersed in a tense situation as you begin the game, your character is slow, and weak in terms of combat and parkour abilities, and the zombies are too much to deal with in groups of two or more. Using a flimsy chair leg or gas pipe to bludgeon the zombies to death at the beginning is a challenge, and often times you will have to retreat after a couple of swings with your not so trusty pipe.

Combat, agility, and crafting vastly improve as you complete tasks and fight enemies. You will soon gain access to new weapons and abilities, both through crafting and scavenging the city for useful components. Survival sense allows you to find tons of useful parts as well as track objectives.

After playing for over twenty hours, I am only 15% done with the main storyline. I enjoy completing many of the side-quests as well as exploring the gorgeous city.
Guns are incredibly scarce, I have only found two so far, and ammo is also very rare. Guns are best used on human foes only as zombies can be damage sponges.

As you play, you will level your skill trees to fit your play style. You can become a bloodthirsty berserker, killing everything in your path, or a very nimble fighter that utilizes knives and superior agility moves.

There are tons of weapons to find and craft that fit many different play styles. Night time is completely different and is very tense. While you feel fine during the day, the night makes you feel vulnerable and weak. The rewards for surviving the night and completing tasks at night are great and might be worth the risk once you get some better equipment.
