Book Description

February 7, 2012
An aspiring artist. A high-school senior. A stripper. Three women who seemed to have nothing in common except their sudden disappearance. But one man knew them all. Wealthy, privileged Craig Thornton even claimed to love them. And for that, they paid the ultimate price. When Adrianna Barrington receives an anniversary card from her husband Craig, she assumes it's some crackpot's idea of a joke. After all, Craig is dead. But then come phone calls, flowers, messages...all reminding her how much Craig misses her. While Adrianna begins to doubt her sanity, grisly remains are found on the Thornton estate. Detective Gage Hudson is convinced the bodies are linked to Craig. But the biggest shocks are yet to come. A psychopath has taken up his chilling work again, each death a prelude to the moment when she is under his control at last. And the only way for Gage and Adrianna to stop him is to uncover the truth about a family's dark past - and a twisted love that someone will kill for, again and again...

5.0 out of 5 stars tense romantic suspense, December 3, 2009
This review is from: Dying Scream (Paperback)
The DUI shattered Adrianna Barrington's life as she lost the baby she was carrying and her husband Craig Thornton never came out of the coma. Although the other driver drunkenly caused the accident, Adrianna went bankrupt to pay the medical bills; finally leading to her selling her family estate.

However, the buyer demands the family graveyard be relocated, but when the extraction begins, more bodies are found than should be there. Detective Gage Hudson investigates. Soon afterward three females who knew Craig vanish while Adrianna receives calls and cards from allegedly her dead husband claiming he misses his wife and will soon come for her.

This is a tense romantic suspense that grips the audience from the moment Adrianna receives an anniversary card from the grave. The story line is fast paced throughout with the "required" romantic subplot taking a needed back seat to the thriller elements especially that of a serial killer who either is her husband whom the beleaguered heroine interred though he is not in his coffin or something or someone else playing Craig's life, but motive remains elusive. Dying Scream is a taut serial killer investigative thriller.

4.0 out of 5 stars A page turner - couldn't put it down!, November 30, 2009

Mary Burton's "Dying Scream" was a real treat to read. I found that it was hard for me to put down once I would start reading! Her character development was phenomenal - I really felt as though I knew the characters on a very intimate level. The sense of loss that is conveyed by several tragedies which happened to the characters was very real for me. The only thing I found completely unnecessary in this book (keeping me from giving it 5 stars) was the explicit sex scenes. They made me feel as though I was reading a cheap romance novel that you would find in a pharmacy.

Overall though, I would highly recommend this book. It was enjoyable - definitely worth the money!

4.0 out of 5 stars Husband's thoughts on the book, December 28, 2009
This review is from: Dying Scream (Paperback)
"Dying Scream," by Mary Burton, is a suspenseful, convoluted, romantic, thriller. Gage Hudson, ex-NFL quarterback whose sister was abducted for 4 days many years ago, quit the NFL to be a detective working the missing persons. There are three missing women with one thing in common, Craig Thornton, wealthy scion of old Virginia who died recently due to drunk driver hitting him and his pregnant wife, Adrianna nee Barrington, also a Virginia blue blood. The baby was lost, and Craig remained in a coma until his death.

The remains of two missing women are found on the Thornton estate, and Detective Hudson believes Craig killed them. But a new one turned up dead, and Adrianna has received a card from dead husband Craig. Old family secrets, hereditary and upbringing, blood bloods and trailer people, keep this saga filled with surprises.

Burton writes a really interesting story. Around every corner of this investigation small things lead to surprises. Just when I thought I had figured it out, something else came to light. This was descriptive without being real gory or detailed and the twists were well placed throughout the story. The ending was not what I suspected and ended as a romance would. Suspense, romance, and murder make this a good, fast paced, and enjoyable read.
