Stephen Booth is an award winning British crime writer, the creator of two young Derbyshire police detectives, DC Ben Cooper and DS Diane Fry, who have appeared in eleven novels set in England's beautiful and atmospheric Peak District. I read the first three or four books in this series. The hero is a friendly, if somewhat guileless, young police officer in a rural area. The heroine is a young woman who has just transferred in. They are partnered. Through several books, I kept waiting for her to adjust and mellow. She never did. I began to find her character more and more irritating: suspicious and coniving, yet uninteresting. Though this is suposedly explained by an incident that occurred in her past, I just could not relate to her. I eventually gave up on the series.
