Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A country-and-western tavern called CHAPS on the San Francisco peninsula is the setting for this creditable debut featuring Charlotte "Charlie" Plato, a 30-year-old divorcee with an attitude. Charlie, who lives above the tavern with her pet rabbit, Benny, is in the tavern partnership with Savanna, an African American version of Dolly Parton; Angel, an ex-rodeo rider; and Zack Hunter, an actor who bolted from his successful TV series two years earlier. After an earthquake, Charlie discovers the skeletal remains of a foot in a flowerbed. Det. Sgt. Taylor Bristow, an African American cop who quotes Shakespeare and is smitten with Savanna, determines that the corpse belongs to an elderly man who was killed more than six months ago. Learning that the police aren't giving the crime high priority and motivated by an anonymous phone call suggesting money was buried with the body, Charlie investigates on her own. Zack helps by discussing the cases he solved as a sheriff on his TV show, at the same time subjecting her to his seething sexuality and general obtuseness. With a wry tone and a good heart, Charlie gamely traces the dead man's identity and, after some missteps, confronts the murderer. Although she reminds us too often of her curious nature and over-reports her romantic interests, Charlie demonstrates an appealing, lightweight charm.

From Library Journal

A more recent California earthquake gives rise to this murder plot when a newly opened fissure in the flower bed beside a country-and-western bar reveals a skeleton. Charlie Plato, unofficial security guard, part-owner of the club, and discoverer of the "body," sports orange hair, skinny hips, and attitude. Threatening phone calls spur her to discover the identity of the victim and his possible connection to her business. Easy pacing, solid plotting, and well-oiled prose add to the country flavor. From the author of Shadow of a Doubt (Harlequin, 1993).

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good, January 19, 1998

I had never read anything by this author before, so based on the different reviews I read on this website I picked it up. It was really very good! It read smoothly and did not lag in any spots. It kept you guessing to the end. Usually, I don't have any problems picking out who did it, but I did with this one. I am definitely looking forward to reading her second book.

Dying to Sing starts off with an earthquake and keeps going and going! This is a great story with characters you can believe in all the way. Charlie Plato is wonderful and I'd love to have her for my friend. I wouldn't slam the door on Zack either. If you love country, you'll love Dying to Sing--it's the real thing. If you don't like country, you'll love it anyway. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Flawed but pretty good, March 17, 2000
This review is from: Dying To Sing (Charlie Plato Mysteries) (Paperback)
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. But what was the point of the "dead" rabbit? Why *was* Angel so upset? Do we really need to be reminded every other paragraph that Zack turns Charlie on against her better judgment? And I guess my biggest gripe is that there seemed to be very little actual detection...the murderer confessed before Charlie and co. figured it out.

Still, overall, I liked it. I doubt I'll put this series very high on my list of reading priorities, though.
