Book Description

October 19, 1995
Written by lesbians of different ages, races and religions—and compiled by one of the gay movement’s best-known writers and activists—these original essays give vibrant voice to the diversity of the lesbian experience. Celebrating the many ways in which the lesbian experience is unique from all others, many of these pieces focus on specific lesbian concerns such as sexual practices, raising children and higher incidence of certain illnesses.Beyond pointing out these differences, the essays also provide a comprehensive view of the many phases of lesbian life by covering diverse topics like body piercing, coming out and work. Short narratives—“To Mother or Not to Mother,” “Confessions of a Lesbian Vampire,” “About Being an Old Lesbian in Love,” and more—complement and enrich the main essays, adding a unique personal tone to the collection. A mix of the serious and the irreverent, Dyke Life is an important contribution to gay and lesbian literature.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Lesbians have arrived, say the media, but the majority of them remain ignored, editor Jay says in introducing this anthology intended "to counteract the trend of books by and about lesbians that address only fragments of our communities." The contents are grouped into topical sections entitled "Relating to Others," "Relating to Each Other," "Sex and Gender Identity," "The Public World," and "The Lesbian Body." Outstanding contributions include Terri de la Pena on the homophobia that begins at home; Lauren Crux on lesbian midlife; Tee A. Corinne on breaking up; JoAnn Loulan on dismantling stereotypes; Lee Lynch on the stresses of fighting for basic civil liberties; Kitty Tsui's moving memorial for her best friend, dead at 39 from cancer; and Yemaya Kauri Alecto, Amanda Kovattana, and Slick Harris representing the cutting edge of sexual radicalism with writings on body piercing, lesbian vampirism, and dildos. Lists of further readings abound, making this overview of contemporary lesbian experience even more welcome. Whitney Scott

The thing i enjoyed most about this non-fiction lesbian book was the wide selection of topics. From lesbians in the work place, aging lesbians, marriage, etc, this book has a great "wideness" to it. Not to mention, each topic is split up perfectly, making whatever information you are looking for easy to find.
