Careful: NOT Bob Dylan & The Band
on May 22, 2013
The editorial review for this CD is misleading. The only artists mentioned in this marketing review are Bob Dylan & The Band, likewise the only artist images on the album artwork are of Bob Dylan & The Band. In fact, none of the recordings on this compilation are by Bob Dylan & The Band but rather by various artists whose earlier versions of the songs included on the tracklist MAY BE among those which Bob Dylan & The Band were remembering when they covered them during their 1967 Basement Tapes sessions.
The main issue in the editorial review is the word "original". While the seller means "original versions of songs by other artists that were covered by Bob Dylan & The Band while at Big Pink", the word original is also just vague enough to suggest "basic tracks recorded by Bob Dylan & The Band from 1967 without 1975 overdubs". As for what "real" versus "casual" Bob Dylan fans ought to know with regards to commercial availability - there have in fact been a few mysterious, short-lived commercial releases in the past year via European distributors, and for a fan whose ultimate goal is to get the music, the first impulse is to grab it whenever it becomes available, even if it seems to good to be true.
To minimize the frequency of returns on this item, I would suggest the seller post a new editorial review with a more explicit description of this product, something to the effect of: "While recording some of their groundbreaking music at Big Pink, Bob Dylan & The Band also covered songs made famous by other artists. This compilation features recordings of those songs by various artists such as Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and Dinah Washington, all of whom appear to have influenced Bob Dylan & The Band."
