Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Nickelodeon, the cable channel for youngsters, branches into publishing via this new Fifteen series. Based on the episodic drama of the same name about high-school students from a middle-class suburb, the novels focus mainly on the problems instigated by the conniving Brooke, who uses even blackmail to win back Matt, a star athlete with a drinking problem. But he's seriously involved with Ashley, the pretty overachiever fighting a "Miss Perfection" image. Her best friend is Courtney, a writer admired by Jake, Matt's affable buddy--only he's not exciting like Dylan, the good-natured rebel Courtney finds irresistible. The books, while not high-minded literature, will undoubtedly sell--the recognition factor of Nickelodeon itself is a draw--and they do have entertainment value, especially when Brooke's outlandish schemes backfire. She and her more realistically portrayed contemporaries should garner high ratings, particularly among the show's viewers. Ages 9-14.

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-10-- Based on a television series, these stories focus on four high school friends whose lives are often complicated by a jealous peer. Spiteful Brooke, who is too mean to be true, has the advantages of good looks and a privileged home, but she suffers from low self-esteem. Her targets are Ashley, Courtney, Dylan, and Matt. In one episode, star-athlete Matt recognizes and conquers a recurring alcohol problem. In another, rock musician Dylan narrowly escapes serious injury in a motorcycle accident caused by his foolish overconfidence. Although the drama takes place in a variety of local settings, the world of these teen characters is really very limited. It is an adolescent-dominated microcosm in which younger siblings are assigned minor roles and adults, such as parents and teachers, make brief appearances as heavies. Fans of the TV series and/or reluctant readers might enjoy this summer-weight fiction, but there is much better reading out there. --Sue A.
