I used 2 packs of dye for an Ikea chair and ottoman cover that I made myself from painters drop cloth- I used it in my washing machine and it came out perfect, if you have a top-loader no worries- it did not stain my machine and no messy clean up either.
The color came out perfect no spots like you can get with hand dying. ( mixed the dye in a large soda bottle with the salt and added it to water while the machine was filling then added the covers, before the agitation cycle ( 20min.) was over I stop the machine and for the next 1.5h I let it sit and just agitated it for a minute or so every 10 min., after time was up I let the machine run a normal cycle ( no soap ))

The dye worked well if I used approximately twice the strength call for on the label.

When in Doubt, Use more,

I recently purchased this dye to re-dye some of my fading black clothing. It was about 15 items of clothing ranging from small to medium, mostly shirts but did include two pants and one bed sheet. I used three packets (the packets are the size of your palm), it got my clothes a shade darker. Looking back on it now, I should have used more, about 5-6 to get the black that I wanted. Well live and learn. So my point is that the packet says that one is enough to dye to one large shirt to full black, so if you have a few items you want to dye all at once just to be on the safe side, use more. And it works really well on full cotton clothing; those items absorbed the dye best.

It Ain't Easy Bein' (Tropical) Green,
By Zolton "Veni. Vidi. Reviewi." (Brookline, MA) - See all my reviews

I decided to go shamrocks-to-the-wall this St. Patrick's Day. Too many years, I've been left on the wrong side of the rainbow, stuck holding my Irish for a whole 'nother year. This year, I was determined to paint the town -- and myself, if need be, inside and out -- GREEN.
When I go all out, I go *ALL*. *OUT*. So I decided to dye my hair green for the holiday this year. Anyone can wear their colors on their sleeve -- I can wear mine under a _tiara_. Only I don't wear a tiara. But I should, because this hair dye move was HARDCORE ROCK STAR. Unfortunately, I picked the first 'green dye' I found in the search, which was this one. Which happens to be for fabrics. And which my hair is not. That wasn't a big problem, because it says right in the description that it works on 'all natural fibers', which my hair *is*. So I squeezed it out onto my head and massaged it in deep -- while I read the rest of the description, which includes the word 'PERMANENT'. Ouch. The good news is that the dye works like a dream. I got even coating all over, great penetration down to the roots, and the color is as vibrant and rich as a Nicaraguan jungle. Also, those pesky gray hairs I've been noticing lately? No longer an issue. Of course, the bad news is that I'm going to look like an Emerald City troll doll for the next six-to-eight weeks, until my hair grows out. That is, IF my hair grows out. But no matter. Until then, *every* day is Saint Patrick's Day, and I get to celebrate it all the way into May. Which is what I was really hoping for in the FIRST place.

I've been dyeing fabric, mostly shirts and pants, for years, but I'd never used Dylon before, only Rit, with mixed results. At the risk of stating the obvious, since it seems like people are complaining about the color, I'm just going to go through the whole process of how I do this. Hope it helps, and I apologize if it sounds a little too Captain Obvious. First of all, each packet of dye is meant to only dye about 1/2 a pound of fabric--a large t-shirt, something like that. The more items you try to dye with one packet, the weaker the color is going to be. I usually dye two adult small or medium shirts with one packet. I could probably do more, but I rarely need to, so why mess around with it? Second, I try to use the bare minimum amount of water I can get away with. The more water you use to mix the dye, the weaker the color. When I mix the dye, here's what I do: I use a large crock pot/slow cooker and fill it about halfway with water. Turn it to high. When it heats up, I add the dye, and stir it until it's totally dissolved. Then I add the salt, let that dissolve, and finally then add the clothes. Once the clothes are in, if the water isn't mostly or totally covering them when they're soaked, I add an extra cup or three until I'm happy with the coverage. I turn the crock pot to low, and leave the clothes in there for about an hour. Every couple of minutes, I use a pair of tongs to shift the fabric around. This last bit is really important and something that a lot of people don't do--if you don't agitate the stuff, there's a good chance you'll end up with spots that don't get dyed, and the color won't be even. The tongs part is important because this stuff will stain EVERYTHING, especially you. You do not want to get this on your hands, haha. It comes off of other surfaces alright, it didn't stain the slow cooker, the bathtub, or even the floor (...I'm a little accident-prone, okay?!) but the bit of it I managed to get on my skin is definitely not going anywhere for a while. After enough time has passed and I like the color, I use the tongs to take the clothes out, put 'em in the bathtub, and run cold water over them until it runs clear. Then I put them through the washing machine once or twice, and you're good to go. Third, I try to stick with fabrics that I know will take the dye well. Plain white cotton shirts are the best, but lighter colors and natural fibers in general are a better choice. I mean, if you try to dye a black polyester jacket or something, it's just not going to absorb. And even on otherwise forgiving fabric, there can still be spots--a lot of shirts, the stitching on the collar and sleeves will still stay the original color. So you have to have reasonable expectations for any kind of fabric dyeing project. Okay, with all that said, I really love this dye and definitely plan to use it more. This time around, I tried the turquoise/Bahama blue, and it's gorgeous--absolutely the color I wanted. Two adult medium t-shirts in one packet of this dye and it's exactly the color on the package.

I have purchased this dye several times and the color is very dependable. Really pretty sky blue tone. It's easy to use and very little rinses or washes out.

A friend gave me a pair of jeans which had those trendy faded spots on them (including whiskering) which I didn't like. I used two packets of this dye and made them a normal, uniform color. I haven't had any issues with dye running or anything. I used a large bucket in the bathtub to dye them.

I had ordered this based on a few reviews i saw, but when I used it to dye a sweater I've had for 10 years it did not work. Bought another brand of dye and it worked great on the same sweater. And i followed the directions to a t. So i do not recommend this product.
