Rattles are for babies,

This has a lot of uses beyond car applications. I used a sheet of it on the drywall behind in-wall speakers to cut the amount of sound radiating through the back wall and tighten the sound. I used a sheet of it inside a computer case, to eliminate a tinny rattle that came from the case vibration while it was on. You can even put pieces of it on the inside of washing machine or dryer panels to make them quieter.
It does have one drawback, and that's the fact that once you stick it on something, you will not be able to get it off without making a big mess. It is essentially tar with a foil outer cover, and trying to get it off just leaves a bunch of sticky tar behind. So, choose the place you want it carefully before sticking it down!

Sound Improvement / Reduction,

I bought this to improve the cab sound in my Dakota Quad Cab when I was installing new speakers (my wife blew out the old ones!!). It was very easy to work with and install. All I needed was a utility knife to cut the mat to the sizes I needed for the install. It will stay on after it is in place but it is forgiving on install. This means you can make adjustments with the piece you are working with before you roller it down. Using the roller tool (sold separately)was worth the price of admission. It definitely made install easier and was able to clear any air pockets as well as give excellent adhesion.
RESULTS: After the install there was a quick difference that could be heard. First thing you noticed is that when the doors are closed they sound more like a luxury car door closing. No more hollow sound, they sounded more solid. The sound in the cab is reduced and this is noticeable when no radio is on. Road noise has been reduced and it is a much nicer environment. As for the music...much nicer listening and clearer due to no competing noises from the road. Everyone who enters the vehicle likes it and knows there is a difference. NOTES: I installed this on the inner door and the outer door. Some sites and installers will tell you this is unnecessary but if you are in the door why not. The thin sheet metal is all that is between you and the road. This pack covered two doors in the front. I bought two boxes to cover all four doors. It took one afternoon to install and it was complete. This is not a hard project at all. If you can get the door panels on and off you can install this product. PRICE: I checked all over the internet and found that Amazon had the best price for this. From my experience this is likely to continue. Free shipping just solidified the deal. Check what you might need and compare the 4 sheet and 9 sheet boxes. Most of the time 2 4 sheet boxes will be cheaper per square inch and get the job done. Check prices and decide before you purchase. OVERALL: I am very pleased with this product and would recommend it to anyone. It does what it is advertised to and is very easy to install. It will not make much difference if your vehicle has a lot of soundproofing already but if your car does not then this will do wonders. My truck had some very small pieces of factory mat in the outer door metal already. They were just covered by the Dynamat. You may find the same thing during your install. They must think the truck needed some. I just took it up a notch.

I purchased 2 dynamat xtreme door kits and 2 (12sq) dynaliner to do all doors in my 2006 maxima and the rear deck. So far, I completed three doors and there is plenty left for the last door and rear deck.
Results: There is a big difference...no rattles when I am listening to my music. Now you could hear tighter bass and clear highs. Of course, now the doors have that nice heavy feel to them, and close with a nice "thump". The road noise did decrease, but not as much as I wanted. I guess if I used multiple layers and covered every inch of metal, it would probably make a bigger difference. I was more concerned with rattles that ruined my music listening experience, and dynamat performed great in that department. Overall: I highly recommend.

Decent price for modest quantity of material,

Be aware there is an enormous amount of hype out there regarding sound deading materials. Does this stuff work? Sort of. If you have an older low-end, rattley vehicle, it will certainly help. But if you have a newer high end car, not so much. I installed a lot of the Dynamat Xtreme and it's good stuff and easy to work with. It does help to kill buzzing and resonating from high power speaker installations. Will it make you go "Wow!!"? Uh, no. But you'll probably say, "Hey, that's a bit better". Amazon's price on this is usually pretty good, and free Super Saver shipping makes it even better.

Not enough to complete two large truck doors,

The box says it is enough to cover 2 doors. It comes with 4 sheets. I used three sheets just to put one layer on the inside of my door. I have yet to install the dynamat on the outside portion of the the door. It is going to take about 3.5 of these door kits to properly cover the two front doors on a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500.

Just Buy the Bulk Rolls & Q-Pads or Dynamat 20410 Pads 12x12,

This stuff is much thicker and does a better job.
Dynamat 20410 Xtreme Shop 4 Sq But I went with another company Amazon # B000P70UP8 You get 6 SQ. FT vs. the 4 SQ FT on the Dynamat. Personally I like the quality of the Q-Pads much better. Fibreglass Evercoat 116 Q-Pads Sound Deadener 12 x 12 (6 Per Pack) I installed them on the outdoor door skin (On the inside of course) and I went three layers. I sprayed the 3M(tm) Underseal(tm) Rubberized Undercoating, 08883 on the bottom areas I could not reach. This is the best rubberized undercoating, it dries fast & great. It will not rubb-off or make a mess like cheap undercoatings. We tested this stuff with gasoline on a piece of scrap, we undercoated a piece of metal then the next day we poured gas on it and let it dry on the undercoating, We then tried to wipe-off the undercoating with a towel. Nothing, It did not hurt the coating at all. All the cheap undercoatings we bought and tested from Walmart, Pep-Boys etc. all failed and the stuff melted and was like tar from a roof. I'm glad I never put any cheap stuff on my cars. I also undercoated the underside of the Van with the 3M(tm) Underseal, maybe 16 cans total. In some areas like under the drivers and pass seats on the underside of the van I installed the Q-Pads right to the painted sheet metal. So both sides of the floor are done the best I could do it. After I used the Q-Pads I sprayed the 3M(tm) Underseal(tm) on top of the Q-Pads to give it a waterproof coating and it all looks black on the underside. If you have some good workers and you buy plenty of material you can really improve the soundproofing. I gave the manager at my local Oil Change Shop 3 cases of Beer for his guys to install the materials for me. I pulled up to the Pit (Hole in the Ground to work) and the Gents did a first class Job. Two of my guys were there also. The Pit type of shop is great because you can get to every angle of the underside using a 4-6 ft. step ladder. We did the wheel wells also, that helped so much. Now the ride is very quiet. The Undercoating on the underside was done after the Q-Pads and Dynamat was installed so we could truly hear the difference. Paper-Mask-Off all your Labels on the Frame, Shocks, etc to avoid any overspray. I have a Turbo Diesel 7.3L Ford Conversion Van with a Magnaflow 4" Stainless Exhaust and I wrapped the entire Exhaust including the Down Pipe, Turbo, Muffler, all the pipe and TailPipe. This is the stuff they use to wrap the Headers at NASCAR. It's called Thermo-Tec 2" Heat Tape, Amazon # ASIN: B00029KC02 # Item model number: 11002 . This was the best mod I did to cut the interior noise level down. This Heat Tape did the job. 2 Boxes did the whole job and 2 boxes of the stainless steel clamps by the same company. All together I spent about 600.00 for everything, but it is well worth it. I also installed the Q-Pads under the front hood, then the Dynamat Hood Liner. Don't forget your firewall on the cars/vans interior. The Firewall is important. I hope my tips may help a few of you. Don't think one layer of Dynamat is going to make a big deal. When people ride in my van it's like a mobile Living Room, quiet and comfortable. Best of Fun to You All.

I shopped around a lot and researched sound deadeners before i bought this. i was sure of 2 things, i wanted something made of butyl, and i wanted value. there is no way i would take my truck that ive put so much time and money in, and line it with roofing tar for sound deadening to save a few dollars. when i first started looking at these product i went to lowes and looked at the peel n seel stuff. wow, i cant believe people put that in their cars. the asphaly smell was horrible, and that was in the package at 70 degrees on the shelf. cant imagine at 100 degrees in summer. I wanted to go with another product that is like dynamat but its backordered for months. so i grabbed this to get started with. product is easy to work with. went on great and makes a nice difference. one of the few products that works as soon as u put it on and shud last forever. definatly pricey for what it is, but amazon had the best deal.
The Tip: ive found an incredible sound deadener, i had a "memory foam" mattress topper laying around. after the dynamat, i backed it with the foam, double thick some places. now the hatch of my SUV is like a solid brick wall when u tap on it, and all the bass stays inside.

It works well, I am surprised that someone else does not make it[cheaper]. It is a very low tech material. We used it in the doors of a friends car when speakers were replaced and spent over $100. I bought three cans of rubberized undercoat at Wally-World for about $5 per can and my doors were just as quiet. I guess it is just personal preference and economic priority, for me the extra $85 in the pocket was better. My friend, well he spends money like a drunken sailor...not to offend any drunken sailors out there.

Works well to dampen and seal car doors; many other applications as well,
This review is from: Dynamat 10435 Xtreme Door Kit 4 Sheets (Misc.)
There are many cheaper viable competitors to Dynamat Xtreme that have been available for a long time. Google search "Dynamat alternative". You can literally spend hours upon hours reading posts where people argue which works the best. I decided to go with Dynamat Xtreme based on the mostly positive reviews I've found and have used it to dampen the doors of my past two vehicles (1999 Ford Ranger and currently 2011 Honda CR-V). It works really well at dampening vibrations and improves the bass response by effectively sealing the large openings found in the metal door panels. One layer usually does the job but I use two layers directly around the speaker openings since this is where vibrations occur the most. See the pictures I uploaded of the Dynamat-treated doors of my CR-V.
Here are some tips to install Dynamat on the doors... -Make a template by taping wrapping paper to the door and trim it to fit the area you want to cover with Dynamat. Use this template to precut the Dynamat sheets before applying to door. Flip the templates over and use it to cut the sheets for the other door (since they are mirror images). - Cut slits and holes in Dynamat to pass the door wires/cables/brackets before applying Dynamat. Apply the Dynamat section on one end and slowly work to the other end, peeling off the paper backing a little bit at a time. Dynamat is super sticky and won't come off once applied. - Seal any holes with small cut pieces of Dynamat. You want to make the door as airtight as possible. I actually have used the Dynamat for other applications as well. I lined the inside of my Sony Blu-ray player which greatly reduced the transport noise I was hearing from it. I also used it to mass dampen my CD player which hypothetically improves sound quality by reducing unwanted vibrations. I also applied a small piece to the back of the transducers of entry-level Grado headphones. As alluded to above, the most common complaint with Dynamat is its high price. Actually, if you compare the price per square foot, Dynamat Xtreme is not that much more expensive and is even cheaper than some other sound damping materials on the market (e.g. second skin audio, fatmat, b-quiet). Amazon's prices for Dynamat Xtreme is pretty good ($50 shipped for a door kit).

Hard to find a similar material,
By
This review is from: Dynamat 10435 Xtreme Door Kit 4 Sheets (Misc.)
I avoided dynamat for the longest time because it's pricey for the coverage area. However after researching this, it's not easy to find a comparable material. I covered the interior walls of my dryer (I posted a photo above) and it reduced the low rumbling noise considerably. Dynamat Xtreme is a butyl rubber compound covered by aluminum foil. The butyl is viscoelastic - it has just the right consistency between solid and liquid to provide maximum sound damping. The foil probably provides some level of fire resistance, since it is hard for a fire to develop without oxygen when it is sandwiched in between the metal layer. Cheap alternatives that some people use include the asphalt based rolls of roof sealer. However that stuff will smell bad when it heats up (whereas butyl doesn't have such odor) and it doesn't have an aluminum layer so it's more dangerous if it were to catch fire, and asphalt can ooze into a liquid. The closest thing I have come across that resembles Dynamat Xtreme is Hard Cast Foil Grip 1402, a specialty tape sold to contractors for HVAC duct sealing. This HVAC tape, a favorite of mine for all kind of sealing uses, is much thinner though. It's also a butyl compound with a foil layer and is also very expensive. Overall I haven't found any hardware store generic material that is as good as Dynamat Xtreme for sound damping on large panels. The price here is pretty good - I called around to some local retailers and they wanted almost twice as much for this kit.
