5.0 out of 5 stars a landmark textbook of classical karate, May 10, 2000

This review is from: Dynamic Karate (Paperback)
The author, a direct student of Sensei Funakoshi, was in large part responsible for the systemization of modern karate training. To say that his technique was extraordinary is to state the obvious. He was the chief instructor of the Japan Karate Association for many years preceeding his death.

In this book he sets out, with a huge number of crystal-clear photographs, the entire body of basic techniques of the Japan Karate Association. This is a truely comprehensive work, including topics as diverse as the building and use of the makiwara (striking post) and calisthenics for use in conjunction with karate training.

No modern teacher has a closer connection with traditional karate, and no single instructor since Sensei Funakoshi has had a more profound influence on real karate training and education.

Sensei Nakayama began the book with the observation that there are no mysteries involved in the study of this martial art. His point was that hard and systematic training are the secrets of karate.

No book on karate can take the place of a competent instructor. This text is however useful to a beginner, showing him what he will be studying over the next several years. It is an invaluable reference to the experienced student, reminding him of correct technique.

This author is also responsible for the excellent "Best Karate" series, which should also be studied carefully.
