Book Description

This book presents a systematic introduction to the theory of paramentric stability of structures under both deterministic and stochastic loadings. A comprehensive range of theories are presented and various application problems are formulated and solved, often using more than one approach. The emphasis falls on the applications and various analytical and numerical methods for solving engineering problems. The matericals presented are as self-contained as possible, with all of the important steps of analysis provided in order to make the book suitable as a graduate level tectbook and especially for self-study.

More About the Author

Wei-Chau Xie received his B.A.Sc. from Shanghai Jiao-Tong University in 1984, where he majored in Precision Engineering. In 1986, he came to Canada to pursue graduate studies, earning his M.A.Sc. degree in Applied Mechanics in 1987 and Doctor of Philosophy degree in Applied Mechanics in 1990, both from the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Waterloo. At graduation, he was awarded the University of Waterloo Alumni Association Gold Medal for outstanding achievement in graduate studies at the PhD level. In 1992, he was awarded Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Doctoral Prize for outstanding doctoral research and potential for a research career.

Between September 1990 and December 1991, he worked at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, CANDU, as a Stress Analyst and Design Engineer. In January 1992, he returned to the University of Waterloo as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure in July 1997 and to the rank of Full Professor in July 2002. He was the Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies from May 1999 to August 2002, and from September 2003 to August 2008. He also holds a cross-appointment from the Department of Applied Mathematics.

Wei-Chau Xie was awarded in 2001 the Teaching Excellence Award in recognition of an exemplary record of outstanding teaching, concern for students and a commitment to the development and enrichment of engineering education at Waterloo. Wei-Chau Xie received the Distinguished Teacher Award in 2007, which is the highest formal recognition given by the University of Waterloo for a superior record of continued excellence in teaching (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4wxQBcqb-U&feature=PlayList&p=1EEE1E6E543426BB&index=0).

Wei-Chau Xie's principal areas of research are dynamic stability of structures, structural dynamics and random vibration, nonlinear dynamics and stochastic mechanics, reliability and safety analysis of engineering systems, and seismic analysis and design of engineering structures. Wei-Chau Xie is the author/co-author of over sixty refereed journal papers, the author of "Dynamic Stability of Structures", published by the Cambridge University Press in 2006, and the author of "Differential Equations for Engineers", published by the Cambridge University Press in 2010.

Wei-Chau Xie is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He is an Associate Editor of ASME Journal of Applied Mechanics.
