Subject not very well explained,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dynamic Technical Analysis (Hardcover)
First of all, I have to mention that this book is not for beginner. It involves a lot of technical terms and techniques that an amateur would not understand. This is probably due to the length of this book because it is so short and full of graphs, it doesn't have enough room to do much explanation and gave examples. Other than that, this is one of the better books that explains rarely discuss TA methods (Bollinger Bands, stochastic, MACD).I managed to finish reading the book in one day which is fast for such a subject. I was very confused at the beginning 4 chapters because the author used a lot of jargons. It gets better at the later chapters when I got used to some of them and finally understand what they mean. Also, the author mentioned a lot about using some software to produce the charts but he failed to recommend one of them to the readers (actually he did but it's in french). So I have to find one on my own which is not easy but unless you have one that works similar to his, you cannot really apply what you've learned from the book. Otherwise, the book explained Bollinger Bands, Stochastic, and MACD well. I only wish that the author can give more examples and provide more charts and resources for the readers. It would be best if the book is twice of it original length. I would recommend it if you don't mind the high price tag and have some knowledge of trading.

Poor translation...,
By CCL (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dynamic Technical Analysis (Hardcover)
Dynamic Technical Analysis is written by one of France's most prominent technicians. The ideas presented within the book aren't bad. In fact, they are interesting and potentially useful. Unfortunately, due to the book's poor translations, simple ideas become very difficult to comprehend. This is not the translator's fault, really. He is obviously not a trader. The field of Technical Analysis has its own lingo in English, and non-standard terms were used in the book. This causes great confusion, and makes ideas more difficult to comprehend than necessary. My second complaint is the price of this thin book. It is way too expensive for the material presented!

I don't like book translations, so i bought this book at Amazon.France, french language. I't a good companion to John Bollinger book. This work features interesting visual approach, with studies of slopes and shapes of bollinger bands.

Although this book received mixed reviews both on this web site, and from traders/investors personally known, it was eventually purchased mainly because of it being recommended by John Bollinger, the gentleman that originally developed Bollinger Bands. My only regret is previously delaying the purchase. It is an absolutely great book as far as content - the most important part of any such book. It provides logically arranged, concise, complete information that will make traders and investors money. The same expertly explained techniques work in all time frames. Hence for those that trade multiple timeframes, it is easy to transition between them. And it follows that individuals specializing in intraday trading, or those specializing in investment portfolio manage via weekly to monthly quick checks will also be well served with this knowledge. It also appears that because it is so thorough and clearly presented, it is suitable for anyone just starting out in trading, or managing their own portfolio. As a matter of fact, in some cases the rules presented are separated for those who are more experienced, or others who are novices. A couple of charts are posted, a daily chart for GMCR, and an intraday chart from today (12/22/11) for BIDU. GMCR is a stock traded before the DTA book was purchased, and was used to see how the technique would have worked in a longer (daily) timeframe on a stock with which I was familiar. Actually some (a subset) of the DTA techniques were in use when the GMCR trade was on-going, most likely because Bollinger Bands have been used for a good number of years, and perhaps stumbled across were similar DTA techniques in the past. A more complete set of DTA techniques were used in actually trading BIDU in real time. While it takes a thorough reading of the book to properly implement all of the information provided, hopefully the chart(s) will at least partly show that there is a systematic way of capturing the most profit from moves up, and taking profit at the correct times to preserve these superior amounts of profit obtained. And of course, traders will likely see the same (inverse) thing applies for the short plays offered. (The daily GMCR chart shows clear signals of when to buy to capture most of about a $50 to $60 move up to $110/share in about six months, and more importantly (especially these days), when to exit with profits (about $45-$50/share) intact. The intraday BIDU chart shows an entry just after market open that provides $2.50 to $3.50/share profit in about an hour - numerous trades like this are available most every trading day. Perhaps the profits obtained would have been more easily assessed by converting the moves to a percentage - which are excellent. But either way, it may be fairly easy to see that superior results were obtained.) OK, now for some of the few things not to like in the book. The charts are too small, and sometimes hard to read. Also, there were a couple of times that there was at least some awkwardness in the translation from French to English. Finally, Dynamic Technical Analysis is one of the best trading/investing books of the hundreds that have been read, and offers content that rivals related seminars that often cost thousands of dollars. |
