Book Description

August 31, 1994 0792330080 978-0792330080 1
This volume covers topics in cavitation bubble dynamics, sound and wave propagation in bubbly mixtures, bubbles in flow, sonoluminescence, acoustic cavitation, underwater explosions, and bursting bubbles at a free surface.
The physics and chemistry of sonoluminescence and the modelling of jet impact during bubble collapse are examples of issues which enjoy considerable attention. One of the most exciting areas of contemporary chemistry and physics is single bubble picosecond sonoluminescence. The high pressures and temperatures generated over picoseconds, coupled with previously unachievable rates of reaction have recently attracted attention. High temperatures and pressures are often associated with symmetric bubble collapse; however, asymmetric collapse can typically lead to the development of a damaging ultra-high-speed liquid jet that pierces the collapsing bubble. Occurrence of this high speed jet was reported at both the microscale in laser surgery and the large scale in underwater explosions, but it is also frequently present in collapsing cavitation bubbles.
The volume contains a wealth of information on the latest research on a range of topics in bubble dynamics, underwater acoustics and multiphase flow and is an essential reference for scientists and engineers conducting research in these areas.
