Automobiles, space structures, robots, and machines are examples of mechanical and structural systems that consist of interconnected rigid and deformable components. The dynamics of these large-scale, multibody systems are highly nonlinear, presenting complex problems that in most cases can only be solved with computer-based techniques. This book provides an introduction to the subject of multibody dynamics, with an emphasis on flexible body dynamics. The first chapter covers the basic ideas of kinematics and dynamics of rigid and deformable bodies. The book then moves on to advanced topics, including finite element formulations, and concludes with a clear, careful explanation of newer computational techniques. With its wealth of examples and practical applications, this book will be useful to graduate students, researchers, and practising engineers working with a wide variety of flexible multibody systems.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'This is an authoritative and detailed book of analysis which will be of great use to practising and academic engineers alike ... the strength of Shabana's work is in its relative accessibility, and this, together with the use of simple, yet effective, examples, and clear and unambiguous illustrations, makes it a book which is going to be well received by a wide cross-section of the engineering dynamics community.' Mathew P. Cartmell, Engineering Structures Journal

Book Description

Large-scale mechanical systems such as automobiles consist of interconnected rigid and deformable components. These multibody systems present complex problems. This introduction to multibody dynamics emphasises flexible body dynamics. It discusses basic kinematics and dynamics, modeling, and newer computational techniques.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Book on Multibody Dynamics, November 10, 2003

This is a well written work with a minimum of "it is left up to the student to prove" or "It is easily verified". The author proceeds from rigid body nomenclature and the non-linear effects of multibody motion, thru a brief overview of elasticity as related to multi-body dynamics and applies both to a good understanding of flexible multi-body dynamics. This is truly a classic work and it is very unfortunate that it is out of print. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs a firm foundation in the mathematics of multi-body dynamics.

4.0 out of 5 stars The past and the future, December 24, 1999
This review is from: Dynamics of Multibody Systems (Hardcover)
In my thesis I used multibody approach to describe a railway wheelset motion in the three dimensional space; many of the lectures I had where based on Shabana's work and I found them very useful. Actually I'm involved in developing fast small mechanism (to be used on electrical circuit breakers) and I need to go further in knowing how to manage system dynamics through multibody systems; the main reason why I decided to buy this book is that I'd like to better understand some of the aspects that during my studies I had to get 'as they are' and this book seems to answer my questions
