5.0 out of 5 stars True YOGA, September 29, 2009

It is an absolute shame that not many more have purchased or reviewed this amazing book. This is truly the beggining of Yoga, or what should be taught/learned before practicing it so that we may have a greater understanding of what Yoga really is.

This book not only delves into the spiritual path of Yoga, but also links it to our psycho-physiological selves. That's right ladies and gentlemen, science has proved and continues to prove the amazing benefits of yoga (asana, pranayama, mudras, meditation, bandha's, etc.)

Satyananda, a former doctor, has written a book for the modern man, on how to attain Yoga through diligent practice and the opening of the book states the true purpose of yoga which is to bring peace, happiness into your life and to improve the relationship between you and your higher source (God; Buddha; etc.) NOT to convert you. As many people do not take the time to read or understand, many practices like this are denounced by those with their own radical beliefs, but the practioners and educators of this belief system put your mind at ease.

YOGA, is not about converting, but finding the life and awakening it to live a fully experienced life as naturally as possible, meaning, utilizing all that we are while living amongst all that the world is and respecting it. Barriers are broken, such as comparing a housewives position just as valuable as a monks, which I believe is a wonderful thing. We are all created equal. And, that we no longer have to die to reach true Yoga. We can live this life and experience its beauty. Yes, some of the old fangled beliefs still linger, like respect your body and respect this earth. But I think that's a great thing.

The text of this book does name certain entities as they are part of their (those native to India) belief system, but westerners and practioners of Yoga should know that this is interchangable with their beliefs or non beliefs.

Coming to the end of my review, sadly, as I can go on with such a mind opening text, I would like to recommend a book...

Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha/2008 Fourth Revised Edition

This is the book all should purchase to follow The Dynamics of Yoga. It has great practices for that of the begginner, Intermediate and Advanced. It also has lessons on all of the mentioned practices in the title. Since I now consider myself an absolute begginer, these two books will be my guide to self improvement and self realization, in tandem with my beliefs and energy practice.

I am truly grateful to Satyananda and the Bihar School of Yoga for making these studies greater than a religious one and available to the world. It has made me understand so much more.

Enjoy

This book gives a good overview of the different yogic practices found in the Satyananda Yoga tradition. Covers many different meditation methods in a fairly broad way. It does not go into extreme detail. Definitely a good book for any aspiring yogi.

This review is from: Dynamics Of Yoga (Paperback)
This book is an excellent introductory book published by Yoga Publications Trust (Former Bihar School of Yoga, converted as Bihar Yoga Bharati, a Yoga University).

This book gives a brief intro concept of all concepts of Yoga. For detailed understanding and further learning, one has to read other books published BYB.
