A long time DW fan, I was really looking forward to getting my hands on this latest installment. Now after playing it on and off for the last 2 weeks I thought I would share a few observations for those of us still chugging along with the PS2s :)

Another installment of the Dynasty Warriors franchise, where you choose a warrior from the Three Kingdoms' period to fight in historic battles to eventually conquer all of China. It's the same recycled storyline since the second installment, plus a few added features such as the new "renbu" fighting system and the ability to climb ladders, which gives to the feel that you're actually fighting on the battlefield.

But, all of these new features comes with a price. For unexplained reasons, KOEI decided to cut out seven characters from the previous installment, and has cloned a bunch of characters. A few features have also been cut from the PS2 version, such as dueling and the ability to swim. So, in compensation for that, this version gives six characters their own stories and weapons.

As I've mentioned before, the fighting system has been completely renovated. In the previous games, your attack were limited to a simple six to nine slashes. Now, there's renbu system which allows you to do a variety of attacks, such as throws, charges, and a continuous chains of rapid hits. They've also traded in the bodyguards for horses which you can train to be stronger, each with their own individual traits.

Another thing that sets this game apart from the other Warriors games is that they've added plenty of cutscenes to the battles and more importantly, the storylines. Now, you can see the warrior's thoughts before going to battle, and events that happen during and after them.

The character's designs and weapon's have also been overhauled, replacing their old, tired, attires for more flashy looking ones. To long-time players, the new weapons have taken away a lot of signature weapons they all knew and loved, but thankfully the PS2 version fixes some of that.

The negative aspects of this game are really, really, annoying and can sometimes even take away the fun of the game. The major lag is pretty bad, but manageable, since they don't last that long. The thing that really kills this game is the lack of people to fight on your television. Sometimes is gets to the point that people just pop right in front of you and disappear faster than Criss Angel could.

So it comes down to this age-old question, "Should I buy this?" If you're a fan of Dynasty Warriors then you're definitely going to love it, if you're not, maybe not as much. My opinion is that you should at least give this game a play-through and see if you like it or not.

A long time DW fan, I was really looking forward to getting my hands on this latest installment. Now after playing it on and off for the last 2 weeks I thought I would share a few observations for those of us still chugging along with the PS2s :)

LOVES:

The New Character Designs - While some are a little out there and few weapons have gone from bad to worse, the fresh new character designs inject a bit of interest into a storyline we're all pretty familiar with by now.

The Cut Scenes - We're now treated with an abundance of cut scenes for each of the playable characters. This really helps to flesh out the story lines and add insight into the overall war.

Climbing and Sieges - Once again, not groundbreaking (see Samurai Warriors) but something that adds a new dimension to the game

Carnage - It's still very fun to just take out your frustrations on a horde of peons. This time around the weapons had a more "lethal" feel to the blows as well...a nice satisfying bit of physics for those of us who felt like some of the older games were a little "slicing through hordes like warm butter".

-------------------

HATES:

L-a-g-g-i-n-g.... - Probably because I am only playing this game on a PS2 and not the coveted PS3, but man, oh man does this game tend to lag on some screens (Battle of Chi-Bi, I'm looking at you!). And pity unto you who are already using a slow character.

Maps - Sure, I love a little topography as much as the next gamer, but I found the abundance of confusing, absurdly designed maps and levels to be a bit frustrating...especially when you're in a time crunch. Dead-ends, canyons that seem to stretch the length of the map and the Castle at Hei Fei...good lord....this place has more up and down than a newlywed's hotel bed.... Unnecessary.

Renbu System - I know some people love it, and I can forgive the lack of weapon customization etc.... but with the new renbu system your warrior starts off with a 1st level weapon at EVERY FIGHT. You have to slowly (operative word is "slowly") build it up to being able to swing 5-6 times in a row.
------------

Overall a good addition to a Dynasty Warrior fan's collection (especially for the price), but not for everyone...a definite rental if you're able to.

I've had this game for a year now, and not once has it been unreadable or in any way less than desirable. Thank you!

Ok So I just got this game about a week ago and have been playing like non-stop, I do that with like every new game I get. And I've unlocked just about every character that I know of thats on this one.
So I've been a DW fan since like number 3 and I will admit that they have gotten better, including this one. I was really excited when I found out that they had put number 6 on ps2. Which means I didn't have to go out and buy a ps3 yet. (Still saving my money for it)
Ok so I'll list some of pro's and cons about the game now.
Pro's: New designs on the characters. Including new weapons. The screens are better. And the Musou mode stories that are on the characters I've played have been great. A new renbu thing was added that adds to the amount of attacks you can preform I like it. The horses now can be upgraded.
Con's: as a female gamer I do enjoy playing as the female characters in the game. There are only five on this one. And only three have stories, very disappointing. The other two are only on free mode, oh and Diao chan and zhen Ji have the same exact weapon, same moves and everything. Ok another thing is l-a-g-g-i-n-g, now during some of the battles it ends rather quickly but if you play two player....yea you will get alot. They completely got rid of the Nanman battles, from what I've played so far they have. So I only gave this game four stars, it was going to be three but I like DW alot

The Dynasty Warriors line has been capitalizing on the same old formula for years now, so why mess with a good thing? Two things made the DW line stand out for me :
1) fighting game where you fight lots (and lots, and lots) of opponents instead of just one.
2) a library of standard moves which share common elements across all characters but don't require you to memorize 4 million button presses per character.

Koei carried the tradition on #1 quite well. Lots and lots of guys to kill. #2 though they fell short on with the renbu meter. Now I'm pretty much reduced to spamming one of two buttons in order to do my moves as opposed to mixing it up a bit and having more choice as to what move I wanted to do. At least with past games I would have to pay attention to attack chains and what was going on. Now I can just spam one button over and over. In my opinion, that's a very unwelcome change.

If you're looking for a good DW game, get 5 - it's been the best so far in my opinion.

I was looking forward to this game. Unfortunately, the copy I bought did not work. :( I returned it and requested that the product be replaced. The replacement didn't work either. :( That's why I gave low ratings. *Sigh*

I have now two units (2) of this game that don't work. The game is in the NTSC format and in Europe, where I live, the system is PAL. The game does not mention online, where I bought it, if he is to NTSC or Pal. I believe that the seller does know where Europe is and what system Europe as. Did never play the game because it does not work, the message is still put a valid disk on the playstation....
I am very desapointed.
