3.0 out of 5 stars Dynasty Warriors 3: Extreme...Not worth the buy
I bought this game when it first came out several months ago...bad mistake. I should've waited until dynasty warriors 4 came out. To start off, I have bought a PS2 relatively late in terms with other gamers so I have never played dynasty warriors before. However, I have previewed it at a local store and loved the story, characters, adrenaline pumping one vs. 200 enemies...

4.0 out of 5 stars DW3: Xtremely Different, March 4, 2003
This review is from: Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends (Video Game)
If you have Dynasty Warriors 3, you are in luck. Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends, among many things, gives you access to 7 unique Mosou Modes for Lu Bu, Diao Chan, Dong Zhuo, Meng Huo, Zhu Rong, Yuan Shao, and Zhang Jiao. These new scenarios include situations from Zhang Jiao and the Yellow Turbans travelling to Nanman territory to Lu Bu turning on Dong Zhuo at Chi Bi. Here's a low-down of what this game is like:

(1) Expansion: This game is basically an expansion pack to the already existing DW3. You need the original DW3 disk to get access to the following:
a) Mosou Mode for characters from the Wu, Wei, or Shu kingdoms
b) Free Mode stages and scenarios on the original DW3
c) VS Mode
d) Challenge Mode scenarios from the original DW3
e) The new difficulty levels Novice (easier than Easy) and Very Hard (harder than Hard)
f) 4th and possibly 5th level weapons
g) unique items (Red Hare Saddle, Bodyguard Manual, etc.) found in the original DW3

If you have data from the original DW3 saved on a memory card, you can load it and have the character statistics and items you have recieved from playing the original DW3.

Also, in order to have access to letters (a) through (d), you need to have the original DW3 disk every time you start playing DW3:XL to load the original stage data. This can get somewhat annoying at times.

(2) New Mosou Modes and Free Mode scenarios: All of the "Other Forces" characters except Fu Xi and Nu Wa now have a unique Mosou Mode. Along with this comes new Free Mode scenarios in existing stages (no new stages.)

(3) 5th Level Weapons and New Items: While playing Very Hard mode under certain conditions, you can find new 5th level weapons. Also, there is a large number of new items in this game.

(4) Customizible Bodyguards and Bodyguard Weapons and Items: You can now customize your bodyguards' stats and the way they look. Also, you can now find weapons and items to equip to the bodyguards.

The only disadvantage to this is that the strength of the bodyguards is no longer determined by how many points the officer you are playing as has accumulated. Instead, the bodyguards' experience is determined by how well the bodyguards fare in battle, thus making it somewhat hard to level up the bodyguards.

(5) New Challenge Mode Scenarios: You can now participate in 4 new scenarios: a race to the finish line, a challenge to stay on a bridge while fighting officers, a test on how well you can execute combos, and a rush through all of the previous three.

*: The only big problem in DW3:XL is that the graphics in this game are worse than the graphics in DW3. How did that happen?

All in all, I would recommend this game, especially if you have the original DW3.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a must buy, December 23, 2002
This review is from: Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends (Video Game)
I have never done this before, but it seems that the time is right. Usually, I curse the fools who write a review before the game even comes out, but in this case, in some sense, the game has already come out, so I don't mind.
Last year, one of the best games to grace the PS2 console was released. I am speaking of course of Dynasty Warriors 3. I already reviewed that game, so I won't speak of it here. However, KOEI has decided to release a sort-of expansion to the game. Playable in and of itself, the real fun comes when you play this in conjunction with DW3. Some of the features (from least to greatest):
1) More music and video sequences have been added to the game (ho hum on the music - it was pretty bad in the first on, but the new videos should be pretty cool).
2) New configuration on each stage level (This should be nice, as I am finally beginning to tire of the levels themselves).
3) You can now use developed characters in the challenge mode, and 4 new modes have been added (this is quite exciting, as the challenge mode was totally inconsequential in the first game).
4) New player outfits (pretty nice from an asthetic point of view; I hope they throw in a few stupid ones, like maybe Zhang Fei in a tutu)
5) Bodyguards can now be altered (you can choose from various folks, including Nanman male and those ever-loving, thong-wearing Nanman females!)
6) 15 new equippable items to discover (this is fantastic)
7) Level 5 weapons for 39 of the 41 characters (Fu Xi and Nu Wa are out - you'll see why in a sec!)
8) Two new difficulty levels (beginner isn't so exciting, but an expert level? It was already hard as hell at the top level!)
9) New Musou stories for Lu Bu, Diao Chan, Dong Zhuo, Meng Huo, Zhu Rong, Yuan Shao and Zhang Jiao (This is great; I was unhappy that they weren't included before, since they are integral characters of the novel, particularly Lu Bu and Yuan Shao).
No, there are no new levels (that is too bad), but this seems like quite a game to hold people over until DW$ is released. SO, for those of you who haven't played DW3, this is the perfect time to get acquainted, and for those who have, get ready to load up for more action!

4.0 out of 5 stars Could've been better (really worth 3.5 stars), January 26, 2003

This review is from: Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends (Video Game)
Dynasty Warrior games are mindless addictive hack and slash fun. In Dynasty Warriors 3 I wanted musou modes for Lu Bu, Zhu Rong, and all those other people along with more customization for body guards, so naturally this game, despite a horrendously stupid title, seemed like a good buy. I just wish it was $20, or at least came with a coupon for Dynasty Warriors 4. Fu Xi and Na Wu or whatever their names are still do not have musou modes, which is annoying. Free mode I rarely play, and when I do it's usually leveling up generals for musou. The new bodyguard is cool except for the fact they never get any stronger. If body guards die in one battle (which they most likely will) they don't get any points, so when you bring them to the next (harder) battle they die even quicker. This was such a cool idea for bodygaurds but the execution of the new system is terrible. Plus the archers seem to be even cheaper this time around. If you are a hardcore DW3 fan and want to expand it buy this game. I actually did think the story for Lu Bu's musou mode was pretty good. Unfortunately, most people are probably better off just waiting for DW4.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heavy, Baby, Heavy., January 30, 2003
This review is from: Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends (Video Game)
I quite disagree with my esteemed collegue when it comes to the rating. I'm tracking down the 5th level weapons, which unlike the 4th, don't look like anyone elses, and have new perks. In addition, playing the very hard mode isn't all bad, as I was THIS close to getting my main man Xiahou Yuan's 5th on tong gate. You probably need to have some sort of competence to play it though. That goes for your wingman, or second player, if ye have one. I like the questing aspect of this game. It's added quite a few features to the game, some good, some bad, but get some skill, not to mention the 4th weapons before attempting the 5th stuff, kids. The price is better than expected, considering that you have to pay [$$] for most "revamped" games. I don't fault the others for hating some of the new stuff, it's annoying at times. My advice, drink some tea, get a capable friend, then tackle this game. Have fun. That's the name of the game.

This game is very good. But there is one problem with it; IT IS NOT THE FULL GAME! If you want to get the full game DW3 first then this. Better yet, Buy DW4.
I say this not a full game because you cannot play as anybody other tha Dong Zhuo,Lubu,Diao Chan,Zhu Rong, Meng Huo, Yuan Shao, and Zhang Jiao, in Musou mode.So it is very hard to train if you do not like them because you can only play with the other officers via Free Mode.(To Parents: this game is very educational, because all the names battles and conflicts are historical.)

4.0 out of 5 stars An acquired taste, November 9, 2003
This review is from: Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends (Video Game)
It'd be hard to imagine improving on such a great game already, but KOEI attempted it. The end result; a much harder and complex gaming experience. I was excited to see Lu Bu and all "the other" forces (excluding Fu Xi and Nu Wa) got their own musou. Overall, it was pretty fun to traverse through the difficult nanman campaign and fight off Dong Zhou when you rebel against him in all the new musou modes. It could of been better. Some of the levels in the new musou modes were already in the unexpanded edition, in this, they only have tiny changes (like a different time of day at the yellow turban rebellion level). Still, it was fun for any hardcore player.
5th weapons are almost impossible to get in the game, and overall, don't improve to have any major upgrades. Some of the weapons come with an item actually attached, so you don't have to waste space in your slots. I haven't seen any great items come with weapons as of yet.
It is cool to be able to customize your bodyguards. What's better than having little skinny asian girls in nanman bikinis hacking away at your enemy? You can unlock different costumes, gain better weapons for them and give them items.
There's more levels, more musous, and more challenges to keep any DW fan at bay for sometime. Still, I'd recommend renting it before buying. DW 3 XL is a mixed bag for anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Something about the game you are previewing, November 9, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends (Video Game)
This game is one of the best games I've ever played, but then again, I haven't played many games. Why did I rate it 4 stars if it's one of the best games I've played? Because it basicly obligates you to buy Dynasty Warriors 3 if you want to use Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtream Legends full potential. There are two ways you can play this game. If you don't have enough money to buy the original Dynasty Warriors 3 (like me) and you already bought this game, I suggest that you just keep playing Free Mode with all of the characters, instead of only those select few in Mosou Mode. If you do have Dynasty Warriors 3, then stick with Mosou Mode and if you are having a hard time, then switch to Free Mode and start training until you can flip the level. If you are deciding what Dynasty Warriors game to buy, then just wait for Dynasty Warriors 4 and Dynasty Warriors 4: Xtream Legends to come out and then buy those.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must For Dynasty Warriors!, December 23, 2003

Allright, if you loved Dynasty Warriors 3, then you must buy this upgrade. This is an awesome extension. There are new characters that were not in the original version, and you can play the mousou of Lu Bu, Dio Chan and Dong Zhou. There are other players that you can play mousou with, but those are the most interesting.

The boards are more difficult, plus you can obtain a fifth level weapon for each and every player. It is a significant upgrade, usually it has some special item with it.

If your characters are leveled up, they are the same in XL, it is just an extended enhancer of the game. The graphics do not change, but it makes for very interesting play. I would recommend purchasing the XL for the original, it is very much worth it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dynasty Warriors 3: Extreme...Not worth the buy, June 1, 2003

This review is from: Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends (Video Game)
I bought this game when it first came out several months ago...bad mistake. I should've waited until dynasty warriors 4 came out. To start off, I have bought a PS2 relatively late in terms with other gamers so I have never played dynasty warriors before. However, I have previewed it at a local store and loved the story, characters, adrenaline pumping one vs. 200 enemies at once hack and slash. When I went out to purchase the newest dynasty warriors at the time, I went out to purchase the newest one they had- which was this game. First off, I thought it was a remix with better improvements of dynasty warriors 3, but this is not the case. It is simply an add-on game so you NEED the original dynasty warriors 3 to fully enjoy it. This game only has 5-6 characters that has a storyline and the rest of the characters (there's like 50 or something) do not. This is only a partial game and feels like a demo game to me. It is not worth the price and I pretty much felt ripped off. If you want to buy a dynasty warriors game, get part 4 and avoid this at all costs.

A Kid's Review

Once you actually get it, it seems like just an add-on to DW3. But it is not an add-on. The officers in free mode kick ... The mosou mode people are all pretty bad excepting Lu Bu. The four best officers in the game are; Fu Xi, Zhou You,Lu Bu, and Sun Ce. If you do not buy any other game this year ... buy this.
