Biography

Staind dove into bleaker recesses than ever before and surfaced with their heaviest and most hypnotic album to date, STAIND, their self-titled, seventh studio album.
The multi-platinum Massachusetts hard rock outfit—Aaron Lewis, Mike Mushok, and Johnny "Old School" April—pushed itself to the very brink. There was struggle and strife, but, as a result, Staind constructed a collection of chaotically… Read more in Amazon's Staind Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst fell in love with Staind so hard that he coproduced their major-label debut. This fact should be endorsement enough for the Massachusetts-based quartet's target audience. Although not as heavy on hip-hop influences, singer Aaron Lewis's guttural, dragged-through-the-mud vocals dig into the meaty guitar wall and thrash around the speakers like Durst's band. Dysfunction's all-you-can-eat buffet of decibels grows a bit wearisome by the end of the album, but a couple of numbers stand up and demand to be noticed. "Just Go" boasts a classically sludgy Mudhoney-like groove before settling into an uncoiling murmur à la Judas Priest. The well-executed moshpit-ready "Mudshovel" gleefully cops from Alice in Chains' psychedelic leanings. Staind's hard-rock epistles are certain to gather the band a devoted following. --Jason Josephes

5.0 out of 5 stars TIGHT!, November 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Dysfunction (Audio CD)
This is such a sic CD! Aaron does not have an annoying whiney voice as i have read in some of the reviews. He is a very good singer. This is one of the best new metal/hard rock bands around. This CD is easily up there with SLIPKNOT for best CD of '99. The guitars are pounding, the bass is thumping, and the drums are brutal. I saw them live at FAMILY VALUES and they were the ones who made the concert worth the $35.00 ticket. Here are my individual ratings for each of the songs:

1. Suffocate-5/5 Great opener to the CD.

2. Just Go- 4/5 Good follow up to Suffocate, was the first single of DYSFUNCTION.

3. Me- 3/5 Song really doesn't fit...too soft

4. Raw- 5/5 awesome song second hardest on the CD really gets you going after ME

5. Mudshovel- 5/5 Song that got them popular, but it still is a cool song, love the bass intro.

6. Home- 4/5 Good Song but again they get softer.

7. A Flat- 5/5 again good song to get the listener goin again.

8. Crawl- 6/5 BEST/HARDEST/MOST ENERGIZING song on the CD. the bridge in this song is awesome.

9. Spleen- 5/5 Great closer to the CD. Another hard song. THERE IS ALSO A HIDDEN SONG ABOUT EIGHT MINUTES AFTER THIS ONE IS OVER.

Another thing if STAIND ever comes to your town, go see them live! They are SOOOOOOO kick a** in concert. You won't regret seeing them. BUY THIS!

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprise Surprise, May 5, 2000
This review is from: Dysfunction (Audio CD)
Someone recommended Staind to me saying they're like KoRn. Though I like KoRn, I didn't care because I don't listen to metal all that much, but I decided to try something new, so here I am. I'm really impressed with the purchase. Staind, while owing to KoRn somewhat, are more like our (well, mine anyways) fallen Seattle heros, especially Soundgarden and Alice In Chains. For the 13-year-olds, that's a very high praise (and if you like KoRn and Staind, you'll love those two). Instead of the usual loud racket, bad attitude, talentless metal bands (that's why I rarely listen to it), Staind are very thoughtful. Some very smart lyrics, amazing musicians, topped off with a smooth flow, and you have "Dysfunction". Don't worry though, if it's hard rock you want, you've come to the right place. Mike Mushok can deliver very crunchy riffs with a sense of melody, not catchy, but it will keep the listener tuned. He's a very good guitarist and he should be one to look out for in the future. Thankfully, the rest of the band members are just as talented. Johnny April is just as good as Mike, Jon Wysocki is an amazing drummer and Aaron Lewis has a very beautiful voice, very deep like Eddie Vedder's but just as crystal clear. But what's a band without any good songs? Staind have plenty, even though you only get ten (secret song at the end), these ten songs will keep those who listen very happy. "Suffocate" is a great opener, couldn't have had a better one. "Just Go", "Mudshovel" and "Home" are the singles, I love them too. "Me" is a really beautiful song that may not find a place with metal heads because of it's slow pace, no matter, their loss. "Raw", "A Flat", "Crawl" and "Spleen" are very heavy songs, and they rock, I love them too. The secret song is an acoustic song, if you hated "Me" for it's slow pace don't bother, but it's really a touching amongst the heavy tunes. You should at least here it once. So there you go, a very solid CD that I normally wouldn't have bought but I'm glad I did. If you want something heavy, but not too heavy, I can't recommend this enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best rock cd ever, hands down., August 21, 2000

Anthony (San Antonio, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dysfunction (Audio CD)
Alright, let me just say i first heard of Staind when i saw them on the family values 99 tour here in san antonio. at that time i was not much into rock, but i thought that they rocked it. now they are my favorite band.

This is really Staind's second album, which they really matured on. this cd offers something for everyone, unless you are like me and love every song. The singer Aaron Lewis shares everything with his audience. His singing is strait from the heart, and that makes the best music. See him live and watch how he preforms, he is close to tears. He can truly "sing" as shown in songs like Home, Just Go, and Me. He also gets mad on tracks like Raw and Spleen. I can really relate to him, and numereous times this cd has brought me to tears.

The music is unbelievable. Lead by hard heavy guitars thanks to Mike Mushok who is amazing. Bassist Jonny April also very talented. Drummer Jon Wysocki (is that right?) can pound the drum set with impeccable timing along with Aarons vocals.

When i need to "let it all out" i sing along with the whole cd. when i am working out i listen to the cd. i listen to it in the car. it is always a good time for Staind.

If you havent heard Home, Mudshovel, or Just Go on the radio, you must check this album out. If you have heard these on the radio, there is plenty more on the album. If you didnt really like what you heard on the radio, all the songs are not like that. Just listen to it at a local music store.
